Former First-Team All-American andOld Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year Lucas Jonesenters his third season at R-MC in 2009-10.
A former standout at ODAC rival Lynchburg College, Jones works withHedrick on all day-to-day operations of the R-MC baseball programincluding spearheading recruiting efforts, on field instruction,while over seeing the team's academic performance and strength andconditioning program.
Jones made an immediate impact on the Yellow Jackets program in2008, helping the school
capture its first league championship since 1987, whilemaking its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since1977.
Under the tutelage of Jones, R-MC hit .325 as a club in 2008, whileFirst-Team All-ODAC leftfielder Mike Wallace led the league inhitting and fellow first teamer Greg Meleski broke both the singleseason and career hit record.
In the summer of 2009, Jones had the opportunity to serve as thehead coach of the New Market Rebels of the Valley Baseball League,which is a wooden bat summer league that features some of the topcollegiate talent in the nation. Jones led New Market to its firstplayoff appearance since 2006, bowing out in the second round toeventual champion Haymarket.
Jones took over for Evan Brannonwho left the R-MC program in December of 2007 after threeseasons to take an Area Scouting Supervisor position in Floridawith the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization.
Jones came to R-MC after spending 2007 with the Rams ofVirginia Commonwealth University where he served as a volunteerassistant under Paul Keyes. While at VCU, he was a member the staffthat helped guide the Rams to the 2007 CAA Championship and anappearance at the NCAA Tournament in the Myrtle Beach, SCRegional.
As a player at Lynchburg, Jones hit.426 in his three years in the program, starting all possible 121games over that span. In 2005, he earned the ODAC, State andRegional Player of the Year Awards, and took home first-teamAll-American honors. Jones was also the conference baseballScholar-Athlete of the Year and was a first-team academicAll-American.
