Wernoski, Wian Shine in Nightcap for #25 RMC

LEXINGTON, Va.Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) matched his career high with four hits in the nightcap and William Wian (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) held the Generals hitless over his final seven innings in Game 2 as the 25th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader at Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened in Game 2:
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the top of the first in the nightcap. Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) had a leadoff single, moved to third on a base hit by Wernoski and scored on a wild pitch to give RMC a 1-0 edge.
  • After the Generals tallied four in the bottom of the first, RMC started its comeback in the second as Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) went deep for the first time in his three-year collegiate career to make it 4-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets pulled within one in the third as Wernoski started the frame with a single and came home on a two-out double by Brian Fleming (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) to make the score 4-3.
  • RMC tied the game in the fifth. Wernoski sent a single through the left side with one away and scored on a base hit by Zach Stolze (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to level the score at 4-4.
  • The Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Jacob Hauk (Ellicott City, Md./Loyola Blakefield) led off with a single and came home on a wild pitch to put the visitors on top 5-4. Caleb Hawton-Henley (Fairfax, Va./St. John's Prep) was hit by a pitch and scored on an error as RMC took a 6-4 advantage.
  • RMC posted an add-on run in the eighth. James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) had a leadoff single, was sacrificed to second by Hawton-Henley, went to third on a groundout and scored on a two-out base hit by Wernoski to give the Jackets a 7-4 lead.
  • Wian (1-0) pitched eight innings in recording the victory. He allowed four hits and two earned runs in the first before not allowing a hit over the next seven scoreless frames with eight strikeouts.
  • The Yellow Jackets completed their scoring in the ninth as Justin Lanouette (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) drew a leadoff walk and came home on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 8-4. Baffone was plunked and scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-4. W&L got one run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final 9-5.
By The Numbers in Game 2:
  • RMC recorded a season-high 13 hits. The Yellow Jackets have had at least eight hits in each of their six games and have reached double figures in hits three times.
  • The Yellow Jackets also drew six walks and were plunked twice.
  • Wernoski registered four hits for the second time in his career and both came against Washington and Lee. He had four on May 4, 2024, in a 12-1 home win in Game 2 of the ODAC Championship Quarterfinal Series.
  • Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) had two hits and drew a walk.
How It Happened in Game 1:
  • Bowles had a leadoff single in the first and Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) had a two-out base hit in the second, but neither could come around to score. The Yellow Jackets stranded a pair in the top of the fourth before the Generals used five singles, of which three didn't leave the infield, and a hit batsman to plate five in the bottom of the fourth.
  • RMC responded in the fifth. CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) had a leadoff single, went to second on a fielder's choice and came home on a two-out base hit by Wernoski to make it 5-1.
  • W&L tallied a single run in the fifth and had an opportunity to add more. The Generals had the bases loaded with one away when Elias Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) came in on a liner to left and made a diving catch to save at least two runs.
  • The Generals put up one in the sixth before the Yellow Jackets added to their total in the eighth. Bowles drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out double by Stolze to make it 7-2.
  • W&L put up a run in the eighth before RMC got its final run in the ninth. Duff delivered a one-out double and came home on a single by Brooks to make the final 8-3.
By The Numbers in Game 1:
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied eight hits and drew three walks.
  • Duff went 2 for 4 with a run.
  • Bowles and Stolze both reached twice with a hit and a walk.
  • Carter Schuma (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Peter Phillips (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) combined for nine strikeouts over eight innings. Schuma fanned five with no walks over four frames, while Phillips struck out four over his four innings.
