ASHLAND, Va. – The 7th – ranked Randolph-Macon softball team fell in two close ball games to begin a four game weekend at Carol Estes Park.

How it Happened (New Paltz)
- In the first inning, Ella Sharrock homered to put New Paltz into the early lead at 1-0. The Yellow Jackets answered the first inning deficit with three straight singles by Alyssa Meharg (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen), Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) and Ripley Barry (Buchanan, Va./James River) to load up the bases. Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenburg County) drew a walk to walk in the tying run in Meharg. Ellie Herndon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) hit a two-out single to being home Hill and Barry and give RMC a 3-1 lead.
- The Hawks had Lauren Serrao hit a lineout to second base, but the Lemon and Black tried to double up the runner at first base and Kaitlyn Gordon was able to score on a throwing error. The mistake led to New Paltz being able to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 3-2.
- In the third inning, the first three batters reached base for the Hawks and loaded up the bases with nobody out. Two groundouts, a wild pitch ended up costing Randolph-Macon three runs. New Paltz took the lead 5-3 after the third inning of gameplay.
- Powell was able to draw a walk in the bottom of the fifth inning and Mya Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) was sent in to pinch hit. The sophomore hit a double off the fence, scoring Powell and cutting the New Paltz lead to 5-4.
- In the seventh inning, Hill singled up the middle to represent the tying run for the Lemon and Black. Hill stole second, putting herself into scoring position and Powell drew her third walk of the game as the winning run. Jacy Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) clutched up and hit a two-out single up the middle to bring home Hill to tie up the game at 5-5.
- The eighth inning saw New Paltz score the placed runner from second base on a one out groundout to take the lead back 6-5.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Randolph-Macon was able to get two chances to score its placed runner from third base. The Hawks would not let that happen and the Yellow Jackets would drop the opener 6-5.
By the Numbers
- Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) started the game and tossed two innings, giving up four runs on four hits.
- Kailey Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) pitched the final six innings of the game, giving up two runs on three hits and struck out two batters.
- Hill was the only Randolph-Macon batter with multiple hits with two in the game. The senior also scored two times in her efforts.
- Herndon led the team in RBIs with two in the game.
- Powell ended the game going 1-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.
- Ramos and Davis recorded the other two RBIs for the Lemon and Black.
How it Happened (Marymount)
- Neither team was able to do much offensively in the first three innings. Randolph-Macon struck first with a solo homer in the fourth inning by Hill to grab the lead for RMC. The Yellow Jackets were not done and following Powell's fourth walk of the day, Davis continue her hot batting with a one out single to plate Powell. The lead stretched to 2-0 for the Lemon and Black.
- The bats started to wake up for Marymount in the fifth inning, as Mady Archer started the inning with a single. Haylee Carpenter moved Archer to second with a hit, but Randolph-Macon managed to get Archer out at third for the second out of the inning. Gracie Himmelman came through for the Saints with a two out double into left center to score Carpenter and Tara Corcoran, tying up the game at 2-2.
- Marymount walked off the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a Samantha Papp flyout to right field to score Carpenter on the tag up from third base, defeating the Yellow Jackets 3-2.
By the Numbers
- Sierra Kegley (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) started the game and took the loss for the Lemon and Black. The freshman impressed with six innings of work, allowing only three runs on six hits and struck out six batters. Jackson was sent in for the final 0.2 innings of work and walked one batter.
- Davis recorded the only multi-hit game for the Yellow Jackets, going 2-for-3 with and RBI.
- Hill hit a home run and be responsible for the only other run scored by Randolph-Macon.
