(RV) Football Uses Lethal Ground Attack to Drop WLU

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon football held the football for almost 40 minutes, wearing down the Washington and Lee defense to rush for 280 yards, defeating the Generals by a 24-6 final score.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 24, Washington and Lee 6
Venue: Ashland, Va. / Randolph-Macon College / Day Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (3-1, 2-0 ODAC); Washington and Lee (1-3, 1-1 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets made a statement with a 16 play touchdown drive that lasted almost ten minutes. Mitchell Johnson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) was called on eight different times to carry the ball. The senior capped off the drive with a seven yard touchdown run, putting Randolph-Macon ahead 7-0.
  • Following a three and out on the Generals first drive of the game, the Lemon and Black scored right before the end of the quarter. Johnson gained 54 yards during the second drive, highlighted by a 40 yard touchdown run.
  • Randolph-Macon held the ball for over 11 minutes in the second quarter and used a crucial penalty by Washington and Lee to hold onto the ball during a punt. The extended drive would however end with a fumble on a Trever Luther (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Senior) field goal attempt.
  • The Generals got the ball back with only :48 seconds left in the first half and ran out the clock, as the Lemon and Black held a 14-0 at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, neither team was able to move the ball down the field and zero points would be scored. The Yellow Jackets had the ball for the final 4:42 in the quarter, extending their possession into the final 15 minutes.
  • The long touchdown drives continued for Randolph-Macon into the fourth quarter. Cameron Chatmon (Willow Springs, N.C./Green Level) secured the edge and finished an almost seven minute drive, extending the lead to 21-0.
  • Washington and Lee worked quickly down three scores and an Anthony Crawford 49 yard run set up the Generals inside the five yard line. The long run would highlight the touchdown drive for Washington and Lee, although a botched extra point attempt kept the Yellow Jackets ahead 21-6.
  • In the final four minutes of the game the Generals needed to get the ball down the field in a hurry. Ty Collins dropped back to pass and Tim Semisch (Midlothian, Va./Benedictine) caused a fumble on the sack and would be recovered by Jeffrey Acheampong (Montgomery, Md./Sherwood).
  • Randolph-Macon extended its lead to 24-6 in the final moments, using a Luther 25 yard field goal.
  • The final drive of the game saw Kindin Richardson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) pick off Collins to put the game on ice. The Yellow Jackets would win 24-6 on a day fueled by their long offensive drives and stingy defense.
