How it Happened
  • The match started out even, with RMC taking a slight 5-4 advantage after Marie Hall (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) posted back-to-back kills. The Yellow Jackets were able to stretch their lead to 10-6, but the Cougars pulled back within one, rallying to a 10-11 deficit. Then, four different Yellow Jackets registered kills, putting the road team up 20-12. The Cougars were able to force an RMC timeout after they rallied again, finding themselves down 22-23. Finally, the Lemon and Black were able to hold on to win the first set, 25-23, after Allison Lach (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) posted her fourth kill of the set.
  • Randolph-Macon opened the second with a strong 5-1 lead behind three service aces from Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory). After a few RMC attack errors, coupled with some Averett kills, the home team tied the set at 10. Neither team was able to take a three-point lead, until Lach registered a service ace, forcing a Cougar timeout at 20-17. Randolph-Macon forced Averett into its second timeout of the set, en route to winning the second 25-21.
  • The Yellow Jackets opened the third set on a dominant 9-0 run, fueled by three consecutive service aces from Goode. Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) continued the momentum with two kills and a block, putting RMC up 14-4. Mach's squad continued to apply the pressure, going on to win the set, 25-9.
