Kagey's Ninth Double-Double Leads #17 Women's Hoops on Senior Day


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball saw senior Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) record her ninth double-double of the season to run its win streak to twenty-three, defeating Averett 66-50 on senior day.  

The Basics:

Score: #17 Randolph-Macon 66, Averett 50

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon started the game on a furious 10-0 run that was fueled by Kagey with four points. The rest of the first period was each team trading baskets and Emily Olsen (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) knocked down back-to-back baskets at the end of the period to set the score at 18-8.
  • In the second period, Averett saw Emma Jones knock down two three-pointers to begin the ten minutes and set the score at 22-14 with 7:16 left in the period. The Yellow Jackets conducted a 12-to-1 run to take a commanding 34-15 lead with 1:44 left in the period. The run would start with a Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) three ball and end with a Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) three ball to highlight the offensive dominance. The Cougars scored the final four points of the period and the Lemon and Black would still lead 34-20 at halftime. 
  • Randolph-Macon was able to grab a twenty plus point lead three different times in third period, but its biggest lead came after a Brielle Baughman (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets outscored Averett 16-8 in the period and following the Baughman three ball took a 50-28 lead into the final ten minutes.
  • In the fourth period, the Cougars made a run in the middle portion of the period, scoring multiple points in a row and cutting the Yellow Jacket lead. The final ten minutes would be highlighted by long distance buckets by Cait Velez (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan), Zofia Enriquez (Chesterfield, Va./Monacan) and Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) for Randolph-Macon. The win on senior day would be by a final score of 66-50 and gave the Lemon and Black a perfect 16-0 in conference play.  
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 35.5 percent from the floor, as Averett knocked down 32.7 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Cougars 46-to-42 in the entire game. 
  • Kagey led the Yellow Jackets with her ninth double-double of the season. The senior scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals. 
  • Smith ended the game with ten points, seven steals, five assists and four rebounds. 
  • Ziegler knocked down three triples for nine points overall. The senior also recorded three steals, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and Olsen both ended the afternoon with six points. 
  • McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) blocked two shots to go along with four points and five rebounds.   
For the Record
  • The Yellow Jackets end the regular season with a 24-1 overall record with a 16-0 record in conference play. 
  • The win today officially ties the all-time consecutive wins mark at 23 wins in a row. 
  • The 24 overall wins is the most since the 23 wins that were won during the 2017-18 season. The last time the Yellow Jackets recorded more than 23 wins was 26 wins back during the 2006-07 season. 
  • Randolph-Macon completed the fifth unbeaten conference regular season in 43 years of ODAC women's basketball. 
  • The twenty-third straight win is the fourth-longest active winning streak in Division III women's hoops.
