#18 Women's Hoops Sets Consecutive Wins Record, Defeats Randolph in ODAC Quarters


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball saw senior Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) record her tenth double-double of the season; in thus winning its 24th consecutive game to break the all-time mark in school history. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon saw Kagey score two out of the first three baskets of the game for the Yellow Jackets, opening up an early 6-3 advantage. The WildCats rattled off the next seven points to swing the advantage over to them at 10-6 with 4:39 left on the clock. The Lemon and Black capped off the final four minutes with a 9-2 run that was fueled by a Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster) three ball. Randolph-Macon used the run to take a 15-12 lead into the second period.  
  • In the second period, Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) buried back-to-back three pointers to up the lead to 21-12, early in the second frame. The Yellow Jackets were able to grab two ten point leads at two different points in the period, using free throws by McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) and Kagey. The Matheny free throw grabbed a 25-15 lead for Randolph-Macon with 5:01 left in the period. The WildCats stayed in the game, conducting an 8-0 run to pull within two at 25-23 with 2:27 left on the clock. Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) nailed a clutch three ball soon after the WildCats pulled within a basket, as Bruce scored the final basket of the period. The Lemon and Black would carry a 28-23 lead into the halftime break.  
  • Randolph started the third period hot from the field, scoring the first three baskets and taking the lead back 29-28 early in the period. The Yellow Jackets locked in defensively and went on a 15-5 run to end the third period, taking a 43-34 lead into the final ten minutes. Kagey led the run with eight points and Miller followed by adding five to the total of the run.  
  • In the fourth period, the run would get nine more points added, totalling a full run of 24-5. Randolph-Macon saw four different Yellow Jackets add to the run, scoring the first nine points of the period, taking a commanding 52-34 lead with 6:17 left in the game. The WildCats never recovered from the monumental run from the Lemon and Black. The Yellow Jackets would cruise to a 63-46 win over Randolph. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 46.4 percent from the floor, as Randolph knocked down 34.8 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the WildCats 39-to-27 in the entire game. 
  • Kagey led the Yellow Jackets with her tenth double-double of the season. The senior scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out six assists. She also was efficient from the field going 9-for-12.  
  • Matheny ended the game with nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. 
  • Miller came off the bench and scored ten points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. 
  • Ziegler recorded a career high in steals with six in the game. The senior also notched five points, two rebounds and two assists. 
  • Bruce scored nine points and pulled down four rebounds.    
For the Record
  • The win today officially breaks the all-time consecutive wins mark at 24, besting the old school record of 23 wins in a row. 
  • This is the first time the Yellow Jackets have made it back to the conference semifinals since the 2021-22 season.
