Matheny Nets 21 to Bolster #17 Women's Hoops over Shenandoah


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball saw junior McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) score 21 points and the Yellow Jackets knocking down clutch three-pointers to run its win streak to twenty-two, defeating Shenandoah 59-47. 
 
The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon started the game in a battle with Shenandoah, trading baskets early in the first period. Matheny scored four of the Yellow Jackets first seven points, but the Hornets battled and had the game tied at 7-7 with 3:59 on the clock. The Lemon and Black scored the final six of eight points, taking a 13-9 lead into the second period. 
  • In the second period, Randolph-Macon flexed its muscles, scoring more efficiently and a Matheny bucket pushed the lead to 21-11 with 6:52 left in the period. The Hornets were never able to get the deficit to less than six points the rest of the period.Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and Matheny stretched the lead with two quick baskets at the end of the period, giving the Lemon and Black a 31-18 lead at halftime.   
  • Shenandoah would get back the deficit down to ten, but the Yellow Jackets used free throws by Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) to score six points and push Randolph-Macon's lead to 41-23. The Hornets traded baskets with the Yellow Jackets the final five minutes and still trailed 50-35 after the third period. 
  • In the fourth period, Shenandoah outscored the Lemon and Black 12-9, as both teams were showing more defense to conclude the game. Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa) knocked down the final points of the game for Randolph-Macon and the three period dominance would lead to a 59-47 home win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 41.2 percent from the floor, as Shenandoah knocked down 27.8 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Hornets 41-to-26 in the entire game. 
  • Matheny led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. The junior also pulled down five rebounds, had two steals and one assist. 
  • Park ended the game with two three pointers and scored ten points overall. 
  • Kagey led the team in rebounds with ten in the game. The senior also scored ten points and five assists and two steals. 
  • Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) recorded four points, six rebounds and three assists.
