ROANOKE, Va. – The Yellow Jackets secured a 49-32 victory in their afternoon contest against Hollins, marking RMC's 10th consecutive road win against Hollins.
The Basics:
Score: Randolph-Macon 49, Hollins 32
Venue: Roanoke, Va. // Laidlaw Gymnasium // Hollins University
Records: Randolph-Macon (6-2, 2-0 ODAC), Hollins (6-2, 1-1 ODAC)
How it Happened
- Randolph-Macon spent the opening five minutes constructing an eight-point run, led by two layups from McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield). While Hollins was able to knock down a three to limit the damage, Matheny responded with a jumper of her own, giving her squad a 10-3 lead with 4:35 remaining in the quarter. Another bucket from Hollins' Zaria Holden guided the home team back within five but a fastbreak triple from Anna Wilcox (Asheville, N.C./A.C. Reynolds) pushed the Yellow Jackets out to a 17-7 lead with 2:33 left in the frame. The Lemon and Black ended the first quarter up 22-9, after Madison Langdon (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) registered her sixth point of the quarter on a last-second layup.
- Hollins started the second quarter on a five-point run, thanks to a pair of free throws and three pointer from Missy Hazard to get within eight, down 14-22. At the 7:20 mark of the quarter, Matheny and Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) got their team back on track with midrange buckets to bring the lead back out to 26-14. Smith continued to generate offense in the heart of the second, as two more free throws and driving layup from the junior guard helped RMC earn a 30-16 advantage with just two minutes left in the half. On RMC's last possession of the half, Riley White (Hamilton, Va./Virginia Academy) converted on a tough tip-in to give the Yellow Jackets a 32-16 lead at the break.
- While Hollins opened the scoring at the 7:22 mark of the third quarter with a free throw, Erin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va./Kettle Run) got her first points of the afternoon to get her team out to a 34-17 lead. After making three of her four attempts from deep against EMU earlier in the week, White stayed hot, nailing her first and only shot from downtown of the game to get her team up, 37-17, with 5:56 remaining in the third. While the two programs traded possessions down the stretch, a layup from Emily Olsen (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) boosted Randolph-Macon to a 40-19 lead after three.
- For the opening two minutes of the fourth, both offenses seemed to find the hoop as a layup from Smith and free throws from Porter helped RMC hold a steady 44-22 lead over Hollins. Then, Lila Donnelly knocked down her first-career three pointer to extend her squad's lead to 47-22 with 7:11 remaining. Hollins responded with its best stretch yet, as Holden guided a 10-0 run over the course of six minutes, before a layup from Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa County) ended the run and the game, with a 49-32 Yellow Jackets win.
