How it Happened
  • The Lemon and Black got off to its best start of the season, as quick layups from Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa) and McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) in the first two minutes saw the squad earn the first four points of the game. Then, a three from Madison Langdon (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) helped RMC get out to 11 points, before EMU could get on the board with a free throw. After the 11-to-one run from the Yellow Jackets, the Royals assembled their own run, securing eight-straight points to get back within two. With just 30 seconds left in the quarter, Madison Langdon drilled her second triple of the frame to give her team a 14-to-nine advantage before the first break.
  • While EMU scored the first four points of the second quarter, physical buckets from Matheny and Emily Olsen (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) kept RMC up, 18-13. After Matheny and Olsen traded another deuce each, Riley White (Hamilton, Va./Virginia Academy) checked in and delivered a layup and three-pointer within a minute to extend RMC's lead to 26-17 with 2:05 remaining in the half. After the Royals converted a layup in the final minute, White nailed another shot from downtown, this time extending her teams' lead to 29-19 at the half.
  • For the first five minutes of the quarter, the two programs traded buckets but it was Matheny who extended the Yellow Jackets' advantage to 36-22. Then, Erin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va./Kettle Run) assembled a five-point run of her own, knocking down a tough baseline jump shot, followed by a three-ball, extending RMC's lead to 41-24. Despite the Royals getting within 14, White capped off the quarter with her third three-pointer of the game, as her shooting guided the Yellow Jackets to a 48-31 advantage after three.
  • Over the course of the first half of the fourth, Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) laced two shots from downtown to help build a 59-35 lead. Down the stretch, Langdon converted a difficult layup and three-ball of her own to keep RMC ahead 61-40. Before adding on another two in the final three minutes of the game, Matheny ripped down her career-high 18th rebound. Finally, Byers found Brooke Lynn Miller (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville) for a buzzer-beating jump shot, earning her first-career points to cap off the 67-40 victory.
