How it Happened
  • Randolph-Macon recorded the first shot of the game and Roanoke countered with the first shot on goal just three minutes in. Immediately after, RMC earned its first penalty corner of the game and Courtney Moodie (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) tallied a shot that was blocked. Halfway through the quarter, the Yellow Jackets earned another corner and it was Moodie again who got a shot off, this time wide. Although both Lynn Giesken (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) and Kylee Gorham (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) recorded shots at the end of the first, the game remained 0-0 at the end of the frame.
  • RMC continued to dominate the time of possession, as both Sarah Newman (Toano, Va./Walsingham Academy) and Janne Roelink (Den Helder, Netherlands/Norfolk Collegiate) ripped shots in the opening two minutes. Then, Cali Kujawa (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) put her squad up 1-0 in the third minute of the quarter after a great pass from Newman. Following the goal, the Yellow Jackets recorded five-straight shots, with Newman, Llana Thach (Henrico, Va./Glen Allen), Kujawa and Caitlin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) posting the first four. The fifth shot in the burst was a goal for the home team, as Annie Pruitt (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) gave her team a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half. After the goal, the Maroons earned a penalty corner and shot of their own, but Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) was able to make the stop, preserving the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Ambrogi-Torres was forced to make a stop in the first minute of the third quarter but it was the Yellow Jackets who gained the momentum. They earned three penalty corner opportunities over a three-minute period, in which they registered four shots. Although none were able to find the back of the cage, RMC was able to dominate the time of possession battle. They continued to apply offensive pressure, as Penelope Trageser (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) ripped back-to-back shots on goal, followed by yet another penalty corner. While Moodie registered her sixth shot of the game, the score remained 2-0 through three frames.
  • The Maroons found some offense to open the fourth quarter, as they earned three penalty corner opportunities in the first two minutes. After Ambrogi-Torres stopped Roanoke's first shot attempt, Hailey Swartzbaugh (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) made a clutch defensive save to keep the shutout intact after the Maroons were beginning to apply some pressure. After the successful defensive possession, both Thach and Moodie recorded shots on goal, helping to close the game out with a 2-0 victory.
Inside the Numbers
