How it Happened
  • The first set was tight at the start, with the teams knotted at six through 12 points. The first push came from the Yellow Jackets, as Caitlin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) fired off four consecutive service aces. Her four points were part of a larger 7-0 run, that was capped off by a kill from Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory). After Mach helped her team to a 14-7 lead, the Lemon and Black protected their lead, as Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) posted two kills in three points, helping her squad to a 23-16 advantage. RMC was then able to close out the set comfortably, 25-19.
  • It was the Eagles opening the second set with the momentum, bursting out to a 6-1 lead. Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) was then able to serve for six consecutive points to put her team up 7-6, with some powerful kills coming from Mach and Grace Ostivg (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge). The home team did not stop here, as Mach posted her fifth kill of the set, extending the Yellow Jackets' lead to 17-11. The Lemon and Black cruised on to capture the set, 25-17, after Ostvig registered a kill and a service ace.
  • The final set appeared to be the most competitive of the three, with the teams remaining within two points of each other for the first 18 points. Mary Washington emerged with an 11-8 lead of its own, after posting back-to-back service aces. The Yellow Jackets immediately knotted the game at 11 and then went on to earn a 17-15 lead. After a few service and attack errors from both programs, UMW held a 23-22 lead. With the Eagles at set point, the Yellow Jackets constructed a 3-1 run, with Courtney, Ostivg and Mach each tallying kills to end the set, 26-24.
