How it Happened
- Randolph-Macon opened the first set up 5-4, with Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory), Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Grace Ostvig (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) all recording kills. While Goode was able to fire three more kills in the middle of the set, Christopher Newport was able to string together a handful of kills. The Captains pulled out to a 19-13 lead, forcing a timeout from RMC. Despite Mach tallying another kill for the Yellow Jackets, CNU was able to capture the first set, 25-14.
- The Captains opened the second set with the momentum, creating a 6-1 lead, before the Yellow Jackets made some substitutes. RMC was able to pull within three, thanks to kills form Goode and Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield), reaching a score of 9-12. CNU then posted back-to-back kills of its own, earning a 17-12 lead, forcing a timeout from RMC. The Yellow Jackets came out of the timeout and assembled a 5-1 run of their own, putting them down one at 17-18. The road team forced multiple attack errors, resulting in a timeout from CNU after the Lemon and Black tied the set, 20-20. Despite finding their groove late in the set, the Yellow Jackets were unable to secure the win, with CNU taking the second set, 25-21.
- The Yellow Jackets remained within striking distance of the Captains to open the third set, finding themselves down 5-6 after a service ace from Courtney. The Captains then responded with a 7-1 run of their own, forcing an RMC timeout with the Captains leading, 13-6. Even though RMC was able to acquire two points after the timeout, it was forced to call its second of the set while down 8-17. While the home team came out of the timeout on a 3-0 run, Goode collected four-straight kills, putting her squad down 12-20.
