How it Happened
  • Washington and Lee opened the first set with a 7-2 lead, before Grace Ostvig (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) recorded a kill and forced an attack error, with the Generals still leading 7-4. After dropping the back-to-back points, the Generals went on a 6-0 run of their own, that Ostvig was then able to end with a kill of her own, with her squad down 13-5. While Goode was able to record two kills down the stretch, Washington and Lee controlled the momentum for the rest of the first set, capturing the frame 25-8.
  • W&L continued its aggressive play, constructing a 6-1 run at the start of the second set. After a service ace from Kaitlyn Kaplan (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) and another kill from Ostvig, RMC then found itself down 9-5. The Yellow Jackets continued to fight as they were down 18-14, with Goode firing off three kills. Marie Hall (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) registered her second kill of the set, helping the Yellow Jackets stay within three, down 20-17. While RMC presented a balanced attack, W&L captured the second set, 25-18.
  • The Generals continued to apply the pressure in the third set, creating a 7-1 lead to open the frame. Then, Randolph-Macon had its best stretch yet, tying the set 8-8 after kills from Delaney McDonald (Locust Grove, Va./Locust Grove) and Goode. Goode went on two record two more kills, as well as a service ace, en route to finding her team down 16-15. While the Yellow Jackets were able to remain within striking distance for most of the set, the Generals pulled away down the stretch, winning the third set 25-17.
