Women’s Volleyball Loses Tough Battle Against (RV) Lynchburg

ASHLAND, Va. – The Yellow Jackets dropped a tight match against (RV) Lynchburg, losing 3-0 in sets on Senior Night.

How it Happened
  • Randolph-Macon opened the first set with a 6-5 lead, after two kills from Karlie Morris (King and Queen County, Va./Middlesex). Then, Lynchburg generated a 8-2 run of its own, capped off by four consecutive points to take a 13-8 lead. The Yellow Jackets rebounded with some pressure, as they were able to force three attack errors en route to winning five consecutive points, evening the game, 13-13. After the Hornets got three-straight points back, they continued to hold a three-point lead. Although Caitlin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) continued to provide assists, the Yellow Jackets lost the first set, 25-20.
  • After the Hornets captured the first three points of the second set, the Yellow Jackets earned four-straight, creating a 4-3 lead. Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Grace Ostvig (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) each continued to produce kills in the middle of the set, helping to keep their team down only one, 12-11. LU then pushed out to a 16-11 lead, after registering four-straight points. While RMC was able to keep the set within four, LU surged forward to capture the second set, 25-15.
  • The third set began as the most competitive of the three, with Ostvig and Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) helping the Lemon and Black tie the Hornets at five. RMC was then able to take a 10-9 lead, after Smith posted her first kill of the set. After forcing two more attack errors, RMC had a 13-10 lead. While Lynchburg generated a 6-1 run, Randolph-Macon fired back, with a kill from Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and service ace from Courtney, keeping their squad up 17-16. Then, the Hornets stole the momentum, winning seven consecutive points to capture a 23-17 lead. Despite Kaitlyn Kaplan (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) firing back-to-back service aces, RMC lost the third set, 25-21.

  • Randolph-Macon was able to lead Lynchburg in service aces, eight to seven.
  • RMC has now recorded 25 kills in each of its past five matches.
  • Courtney, Kaplan and Smith tied for a match-high two service aces.
  • Marie Hall (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) finished with a team-high three blocks, tying her season-high.
  • Mach recorded two blocks in the match. She now has posted two blocks in three of her last five matches.
