How it Happened
  • Virginia Wesleyan opened the first set on a 5-1 run, before Randolph-Macon was able to force a service error. Then, the Marlins created a 12-6 lead but kills from Grace Ostvig (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) and Marie Hall (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) kept RMC in striking distance. Soon after, a kill from Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and a service ace from Caitlin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) kept the Yellow Jackets within six, down 14-8. After Goode posted her second kill of the set, the Marlins went on an 11-4 run to capture set one, 25-12.
  • The second set saw RMC gain some momentum, as Smith's two service aces in three points helped the Yellow Jackets out to an early 5-3 lead. Then, the Marlins won four consecutive points, putting the home team up 7-5. Even though RMC was able to force back-to-back errors to even the set, WVU jumped out to a 14-8 lead after constructing a 7-1 run. Despite RMC ending the run by forcing two errors by the Marlins, a kill right after forced a timeout from the Lemon and Black. Down 15-10 coming out of the break, the Yellow Jackets earned four points in the next six rallies. While the Yellow Jackets were able to get within four, Virginia Wesleyan captured the second set, 25-15.
  • The Marlins opened the third set on a 5-1 run, that Goode was able to end with a kill of her own. After a kill from Karlie Morris (King and Queen County, Va./Middlesex) and a service ace from Delaney McDonald (Locust Grove, Va./Locust Grove) the Yellow Jackets were only down 9-5. The Lemon and Black showed their most resilience in the match, as Goode posted her second kill of the set and Trinity Makley (Morrisville, N.C./Panther Creek) fired a service ace to pull within three, down 12-9. Despite the offensive presence, RMC was forced to call a timeout after Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 15-9 lead. Despite RMC winning four of the next five points after kills from Goode and Ostvig, WVU forced RMC into its second timeout, still down 18-13. The Marlins came out of the timeout on a 7-2 run, closing the set, 25-15.
