The Basics

Venue: Ashland, Va. / Randolph-Macon College / Day Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (5-1, 4-0 ODAC); Averett (0-5, 0-3 ODAC)

How it Happened

  • In the first quarter, Averett was forced to punt deep in its own territory and a bad snap forced Michael Markulic to not get the punt off. The Yellow Jackets took over at the Cougars nine yard line for their first drive of the game. In just two plays, Dante Casciola (Charlotte, N.C./Weddington) hooked up with Landon Farriss (New Hanover, N.C./New Hanover) for a nine yard touchdown pass, pushing Randolph-Macon in front 7-0.
  • On the next drive for the Cougars, quarterback Ethan Ross attempted a quick punt on fourth down and it would be blocked by Jarren King (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax). Jake Mulhern (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run) had success in his first two collegiate pass attempts, tossing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Farriss to double the Lemon and Black lead to 14-0 with 8:02 left in the opening quarter.
  • The final score of the quarter came from Cameron Chatmon (Willow Springs, N.C./Green Level), as he bursted through the middle of the defense for a 22-yard touchdown. The Yellow Jackets forced another punt and carried their offensive possession into the second quarter up 21-0.
  • Randolph-Macon held the ball for the final four minutes of the first quarter, on the third play of the second quarter had Tristan Overbay (Daleville, Va./Lord Botetourt) record his first collegiate rushing touchdown. The freshman jolted the lead to 28-0 for Randolph-Macon with 14:22 left in the half.
  • The Cougars punted on the ensuing drive to pin the Lemon and Black on their own five yard line. Casciola took the top off the defense with a 95-yard bomb to Jason Moore (Craven County, N.C./Havlock), driving the lead to 35-0 with 11:48 left in the quarter.
  • The Yellow Jackets defense saw Jacob Kyger (Reston, Va./South Lakes) pick off Ross on the next drive, setting up the offense in the redzone. The interception led to a four play touchdown drive that was finished by Overbay's second rushing touchdown of the first half. The clock read 8:11 and the lead was 42-0 for Randolph-Macon.
  • Averett put together a productive 15 play drive that lasted over six minutes, capped off by a Ross touchdown pass to Jamahrie Owens. The Cougars added one more touchdown drive in the final two minutes of the half but Randolph-Macon held a 42-14 lead at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets started with the ball and drove 98 yards in 11 plays and was punctuated with a Jaxon Jones (New Hanover, N.C./Eugene Ashley) touchdown.
  • The points kept coming for the Yellow Jackets on the following drive by Averett, as Jackson Hall (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) intercepted Ross and returned the pick 90 yards for a touchdown.
  • In the late stages of the third quarter, Kyger picked off his second pass and in two plays the Randolph-Macon offense put the ball in the endzone on Overbay's third rushing touchdown of the afternoon. The elite play on both sides of the ball guided the Lemon and Black to a 63-14 lead with 15 minutes to play.
  • The Cougars scored their final points of the game early in the fourth quarter, as new quarterback Louie De Lulio found Amontrae Scott in the endzone.
  • Averett had the ball with 11:45 on the clock and threw another interception, this time Will Arruza (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) jumped a De Lulio pass and returned it to the house.
  • The turnovers continued to pile up for the Cougars, as the fifth and final interception was recorded by Malakiah Moore (Henrico, Va./Varina) with 9:34 still left in the fourth.
  • Detric Brown (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) put a bow on the game with a one yard touchdown run with 1:55 left in the game. Randolph-Macon ended the game defeating Averett 77-20.
