Kagey; Park Combine for 35 to Lift Women's Hoops over Guilford


GREENSBORO, N.C. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball continued its winning ways with a convincing 71-53 win over Guilford, as three players scored in double figures. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Guilford found success early with back-to-back Zoe Bayer driving layups to take an early 4-2 lead with 9:13 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets answered with a quick 12-0 run that lasted 2:28 minutes. Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) led the way with two three-pointers to total eight points and Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) added six points. The run would give Randolph-Macon a 14-4 lead with 6:21 left in the period. The Quakers cut the deficit down to four at 19-15 with another Bayer layup with :39 seconds left, but Kagey capped off the period with a layup. The Lemon and Black used a 69.2% shooting clip to take a 21-15 lead into the second period.   
  • In the second period, Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) nailed a three-pointer and Park made a layup in the first minute to push the lead back to 26-16. The lead grew for Randolph-Macon after Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) knocked down a three ball to give the Yellow Jackets a 29-18 lead with 7:15 on the clock. Guilford would again manage to cut down the deficit following a Julianna Walter layup, still down 31-24 with 5:39 left in the half. The Lemon and Black converted a quick six point spurt to push their lead to the most of the first half at 37-24 with 3:35 remaining. Guilford used the final three minutes to their advantage with a 6-1 run that was led by Courtney McMillan with four points. The Yellow Jackets would hold a 38-30 lead heading into the halftime break.  
  • Kagey started the third period with four straight points to push the lead to 42-30 for Randolph-Macon. The Quakers stormed back with seven straight points, as Walter accounted for five of the seven points, still trailing 42-37 with 5:35 left in the period. McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) made two free throws to push the lead to 48-40 with 3:25 on the clock. The free throws were a part of a 11-2 run that ran for the final four minutes of the period, as Matheny scored eight of overall eleven points. The Yellow Jackets would take a 55-42 lead into the final ten minutes.  
  • Randolph-Macon pushed its lead to sixteen points on a Bruce driving layup to put the score a 60-44 with 8:41 left in the game. Guilford saw a Bayer jumper fall to get the deficit down to 64-53 to 4:49 in the game. The Yellow Jackets ended the game on a 7-0 run to take home the 71-53 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 44.8 percent from the floor, as Guilford knocked down 38.5 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Quakers 44-to-23 in the entire game. 
  • Kagey led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 18 points, adding nine rebounds and five assists. The senior also totalled three blocks and two steals. 
  • Park ended the game with 17 points, three assists and two rebounds. The senior shot 6-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. 
  • Matheny had 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal off the bench. 
  • Smith scored eight points and dished out five assists. 
  • Bruce ended the afternoon with seven points and six rebounds. 
  • Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) grabbed ten rebounds to go along with five points.

Randolph-Macon will host Hollins on Saturday, Dec. 11, for a 2 p.m. contest to continue ODAC play.
