ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball kicked off the new year with a 53-48 victory over the Ferrum Panthers, behind three players ending the game in double figure point totals.

How it Happened:
- Ferrum started quick on offense, getting into the paint to convert two layups to take a 4-3 lead with 8:12 left in the first period. The Yellow Jackets found their footing and orchestrated a 14-0 run that lasted until Allyson Cassell made a three pointer with 1:06 left in the period. Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) led the run with six points each, helping Randolph-Macon take a 17-9 lead into the second period.
- In the second period, the Panthers would get hot from behind the arc, draining two three balls to start the period. Ferrum would take the lead back and complete a 10-1 run with a layup by Zy'Breayziah Alexander with 6:23 left on the clock. Both teams would trade the lead and at the media timeout Ferrum had the 21-20 lead with 4:47 left in the hald. The Panthers took their biggest lead of the game, following a bucket plus the foul shot by Erin Harden for a 29-22 lead with 1:16 left. The Yellow Jackets received two much needed three-pointers by Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Park in the final minute to pull within one point, trailing 29-28 at the half.
- Randolph-Macon took the lead back with a Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) fast break layup with 6:40 remaining at 35-34. The game turned into a back and forth battle for the next four minutes, trading the lead back to each team multiple times. Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrude's) made two free throws to tie up the game at 41-41 with 1:23 on the clock. The Lemon and Black ended the final minute on a quick 5-1 run, capped off by a Ziegler three-pointer, giving Randolph-Macon a 46-42 lead at the end of three periods.
- In the final ten minutes, neither team were able to score until the Panthers knocked down two free throws at the 5:08 mark to pull within two points. The Yellow Jackets got a much needed three-pointer by Smith to push their lead back to five points at 49-44 with 4:51 left in the game. Ferrum managed to get the deficit down to three at 51-48, but Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) made a driving layup with :18 seconds left on the clock. The basket ultimately put the game on ice and Randolph-Macon would take home a 53-48 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Ferrum shot 37.8 percent from the floor, as Randolph-Macon knocked down 33.3 percent of its shots.
- The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Panthers 38-to-29 in the entire game.
- Park led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 16 points, adding six rebounds and a blocked shot.
- Smith recorded 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists.
- Matheny ended the game with ten points and four rebounds off the bench for the Lemon and Black.
- Kagey pulled down ten rebounds in the game and added three blocks and three asissts.
For the Record:
- Park made her fourth three-pointer at the end of the first half, giving her 153 for her career. The senior moved past Amanda Hiltunen'09 for sixth all-time in Randolph-Macon women's basketball history for made three-pointers in a career.
