Kagey's Double-Double Gives Women's Hoops 12th Straight Win


LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball used a double-double by Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) and suffocating defense to win its twelfth game in a row, beating Lynchburg 60-46. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon kicked off its first possession of the game with a three-pointer by Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carrroll) to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. The Lemon and Black extended its lead to 5-0, following a Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) made jumper with 7:52 left on the clock. Lynchburg was held scoreless for almost seven minutes and Bree Spainhour got the Hornets on the clock, still trailing 5-2. Ziegler added to her total with two free throws to pump the lead for Randolph-Macon to 7-2 with 2:59 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets ended the first period scoring four of the final six points to take a 11-4 lead into the second period. Kagey made a buzzer-beater layup to increase the lead to seven points.    
  • In the second period, Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) knocked down a three ball to push the Yellow Jacket lead to twelve points at 18-6 with 6:26 remaining. Olivia Harris would score five consecutive points to pull the Hornets within ten points, still trailing 20-11. Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) made a layup with 2:44 on the clock to push the lead back to double figures for Randolph-Macon at 25-13. Lynchburg would get its offense going, scoring the final six points of the period, led by Spainhour with four points. The Yellow Jackets would hold a 25-19 lead at the halftime break. 
  • Randolph-Macon opened the third period outscoring the Hornets 6-1 in the first three and half minutes, taking a 31-20 lead. The teams would trade baskets for the majority of the period after the Yellow Jacket run to begin the third. Lynchburg was never able to pull within more than nine points and the Lemon and Black never stretched the lead to more than twelve points. Kate Littlejohn would make a layup to put the Hornet deficit to eight, trailing 41-33 at the end of the third period. Kagey led the way with eight points in the period; Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) and Ziegler both made three-pointers near the end of the period to add to the Randolph-Macon tally.    
  • In the fourth period, Taylor Brown knocked down the first points of the period to pull Lynchburg within six points at 41-35. The Yellow Jackets rolled into a 10-3 run that was led by Bruce with back-to-back three balls, boosting the lead to 51-38 with 6:40 left in the game. The remainder of the game ended with the Lemon and Black scoring nine points to the Lynchburg six. Randolph-Macon would take home the 60-46 victory. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 40.7 percent from the floor, as Lynchburg knocked down 34.6 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded Lynchburg 33-to-24 in the entire game. 
  • Kagey recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The senior also ended the game with four assists, three blocks and three steals. 
  • Ziegler ended the evening with 14 points, two assists, two rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. 
  • Bruce was lethal from the third point line, shooting 3-of-5 for nine points. The sophomore also pulled down three rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Smith scored eight points to go along with five assists and three rebounds. 
  • McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) grabbed six rebounds to her four points. The junior also had three steals and had two blocked shots. 
For the Record: 
  • Park's three-pointer in the second period puts her career total at 157, passing Becca Arrington Anthony'22 for fifth all-time in Randolph-Macon women's basketball history.
