ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball won its thirteenth straight game, behind tough defense and three Yellow Jackets scoring in double figures, defeating Randolph 61-45.

How it Happened:
- Randolph-Macon dominated early by taking a commanding 7-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Yellow Jacket defense was the story of the first period, holding Randolph to four total points and 16.67 percent shooting from the field (2-of-12). Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) scored six of the thirteen total points for the Yellow Jackets in the first ten minutes. The Lemon and Black were able to use defense to jump ahead 13-4 after the first period. Â
- In the second period, Emily Olsen (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) kicked off the scoring with a tough layup plus the foul shot to push the lead to 16-4 with 9:50 on the clock. Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) made a driving layup at the midway point of the second period to increase the Randolph-Macon lead to 24-9 with 5:56 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets saw Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) make a driving layup with 1:17 left in the first half to grab the largest lead for Randolph-Macon of the first half, leading 32-13. The WildCats did see Maddie Pabon knock down a three ball with :23 seconds on the clock to set the score at 34-18 Randolph-Macon leading at the halftime break.Â
- The Yellow Jackets started the third period hot on offense, dominating the paint and running a quick 7-0 run to increase the lopsided lead to 41-18 with 7:40 on the clock. The defense also was very active throughout the period, holding Randolph to one made shot out of thirteen attempts and three total points. The Lemon and Black would take a 52-21 lead into the final ten minutes.Â
- In a slow final period, the WildCats finished the game with more efficiency than the first three periods. Randolph-Macon used three dominant periods of basketball to carry them to a 61-45 win at home.Â
Inside the Numbers:
- Randolph-Macon shot 38.5 percent from the floor, as Randolph knocked down 29.8 percent of its shots.Â
- The Yellow Jackets outrebounded Randolph 40-to-34 in the entire game.Â
- Smith ended the game as the leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets. The sophomore ended the game with 15 points, two assists, two rebounds and three steals.Â
- Kagey scored ten points and pulled down ten rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. The senior also dished out two assists and recorded a steal.Â
- Bruce was the third Yellow Jacket in double figures, scoring ten points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.Â
- McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) recorded seven points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.Â
- Olsen had a career high seven points off the bench for Randolph-Macon. The freshman also pulled down four rebounds.Â
