Schmitt Helps RMC Baseball Splits ODAC DH at #17 SU

WINCHESTER, Va. – Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) had four hits and three RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader at No. 17 Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1
  • Junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) had a leadoff homer in the top of the second to start the scoring for the Yellow Jackets.
  • After the Hornets put up five in the bottom of the second, RMC responded in the third. Senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a leadoff single and went to third on a one-out double by freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga). With two away, senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) singled to plate Bush and Quici, making it 5-3. After a walk to Harvey, freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) singled to knock in Webb and make it a one-run contest.
  • SU added five in the fifth, making the final 10-4.
By The Numbers
  • Webb went 1 for 4 with one run and two RBI. He is tied for the team lead with eight multiple RBI games.
  • Bush was 2 for 4 with one run.

  • Junior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) pitched two scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and one strikeout.
How It Happened: Game 2
  • The RMC offense started the scoring in the top of the first. Quici led off the game with a walk, went to second on a walk to Schmitt, advanced to third on a flyout by Webb and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harvey as the visitors took a 1-0 edge.
  • The Yellow Jackets put up a crooked number in the second. Sophomore Nathan Chen (South Riding, Va./Freedom) had a leadoff double and went to third on a wild pitch. Junior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) walked and went to second on a groundout by Bush. Sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) doubled to drive in Chen and Pinto, making it 3-0. A two-out single by Schmitt brought home Hill as RMC went up 4-0.
  • RMC added on in the fourth. Hill had a one-out double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error as the advantage grew to 5-0.
  • After the Hornets tallied one in the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets answered in the sixth. Pinto drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a bunt single by Bush. Hill sacrificed to move both runners up 90 feet. Schmitt tripled to drive in both base runners, giving RMC a 7-1 lead.
  • Senior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) pitched the first five innings for RMC with four hits, one run, no walks and five strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 6-0.
  • SU put up one in the sixth and two in the seventh before the Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the ninth. Wernoski had a two-out single, went to second on a base hit by Chen, took third on a single by junior Cole Mallory (Ashland, Va./Camp CC) and scored on a walk to Bush to make the final 8-4.
  • Junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) tossed the final two innings with no runs and three strikeouts to record his sixth save.

  • RMC is 18-0 when leading after seven innings.
  • Schmitt went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBI.
  • Hill was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI.
