RMC Baseball Splits ODAC DH at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – Freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) had five hits, senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had four hits, and four pitchers combined on a shutout in the nightcap as the Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader at Averett on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the first. Freshman Jon Quici (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga) had a leadoff double, went to third on a flyout by sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) to make it 1-0.
  • Webb had a leadoff homer in the second to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • RMC put up a crooked number in the fourth. Wernoski had a one-out single, stole second, went to third on a base hit by sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) and scored on a sacrifice bunt by senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello). A single by senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) brought home Duff and Bush scored on a sacrifice fly by Quici as the lead grew to 5-0.
  • Lautenschlager walked in the fifth and scored on a two-out double by Wernoski to make it 6-0.
  • The Cougars scored one in the bottom of the fifth before Bush singled and scored on a base hit by Schmitt and the score moved to 7-1.
  • AU tallied three in the sixth to pull within three at 7-4. Webb doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to make it 8-4.
  • The Cougars erupted for five in the bottom of the seventh to go up 9-8. RMC put two on in each of the final two frames but could not plate the equalizer.

  • RMC had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
  • Sophomore Colin Casey (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) tossed four scoreless innings with five hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Wernoski had three hits, one double, one run and one RBI.
  • Schmitt had three hits, including a double, and one RBI.
  • Webb and Bush both had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Webb had a double and a homer, while Bush stole three bags.
  • Quici was 2 for 3 with a double, one walk, one run and one RBI.
How It Happened: Game 2
  • The Yellow Jackets exploded for eight in the third. Freshman Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) had a leadoff walk and stole second. Quici followed with a walk. Both runners moved up when Schmitt reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt. Lautenschlager had a sacrifice fly and junior Chad Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) belted a three-run homer to make it 4-0. Wernoski added an RBI double, Quici walked with the bases loaded, while Bowles and Bush scored on a wild pitch as the advantage grew to 8-0.
  • Schmitt added an RBI double in the fifth, sophomore Nathan Chen (South Riding, Va./Freedom) delivered an RBI single in the sixth and Quici had a run-scoring groundout in the ninth to make the final 11-0.
By The Numbers
  • Senior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) and three relievers combined on the shutout. Ramos pitched six innings with three hits, three walks and five strikeouts to improve to 5-0.
  • Sophomore McAuley (Haymarket, Va./Highland) worked a scoreless seventh with one flyout and two groundouts.
  • Junior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) pitched the eighth with two strikeouts.
  • Senior Jacob Lawler (Broad Run, Va./Battlefield) preserved the shutout with a scoreless ninth with two punchouts.
  • Harvey knocked in three.
  • Webb had two hits, two runs and two steals. Webb extended his hitting streak to 15 games. He took the team lead with 13 multi-hit games.
  • Quici went 1 for 3 with two walks, two runs and two RBI. He has reached base in 20 straight games.
  • Wernoski and Chen had two hits, one run and one RBI. Wernoski had reached base in 18 straight games.
  • RMC is 13-0 when leading after seven innings and 14-0 when leading after eight innings.
