Ellis & Baughn Lead No. 9 RMC Softball to Sweep of UMW

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) tossed five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in the opener, while senior Rilee Baughan (Warsaw, Va./Rappahannock) fanned seven in eight innings in the nightcap after driving in three in Game 1 as the ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team swept a doubleheader from Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 8-2, Mary Washington 0-1 (Game 2 – 8 innings)
Venue: Carol Estes Park
Records: RMC 12-2-2, UMW 11-11
How It Happened: Game 1
  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Junior Naomi Sadler (Emporia, Va./Brunswick) had a one-out bunt single, stole second and scored on a double by Baughan to make it 1-0. Baughan came home on a two-out single by senior Olivia Owens (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) as the advantage grew to 2-0.
  • RMC put up another crooked number in the second. Ellis had a leadoff single and was replaced on the bases by sophomore Ellie Herndon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) on a fielder's choice. Herndon moved to second on a base hit by junior Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian). A single by Sadler plated Herndon and moved Lanyon to third. After Sadler stole second, Baughan's two-run single put the home team up 5-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets would put up three more in the fourth as junior Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had a two-run double and junior Hannah Martin (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) had a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
  • Ellis recorded the five-inning complete game win, scattering six singles and walking one to improve to 8-0.
By The Numbers
  • Sadler went 3 for 3 with three steals, three runs and one RBI
  • Baughan was 2 for 2 with a double, two runs and three RBI.
  • Lanyon went 2 for 3 with one steal and two runs.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • RMC finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Baughan drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Davis. Baughan went to third on a single by Owens and came home on a groundout by Martin as the Yellow Jackets leveled the score at 1-1.
  • Baughan made an outstanding defensive play in the top of the eighth. With a runner on second to start the inning, Baughan got a comebacker and got the runner in a rundown for the first out. Two strikeouts ended the frame.
  • Sadler was placed on second base in the bottom of the eighth. Baughan sacrificed Sadler to third and a single to center by Davis brought home Sadler with the game-winner.
