Elkins Notches Fourth Straight Double-Double Against Shenandoah

ASHLAND, Va. - Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) notched her thirteenth double-double of the season, as a fast start was not enough for the Yellow Jackets in a 47-44 home loss to Shenandoah.

The Basics:

Score: Shenandoah 47, Randolph-Macon 44
Venue: Ashland, Va.//Crenshaw Gym//Randolph-Macon College
Records: Randolph-Macon (15-7, 11-4 ODAC), Shenandoah (18-4, 13-2 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • In the first period, Randolph-Macon came out the gate firing on all cylinders to build a 10-0 lead. Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) led the scoring with five early points on the run and Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) knocked down a three ball in the middle of the scoring run. The Hornets were held scoreless for almost seven minutes, until Terese Greene broke the ice with a mid-range jumper at the 3:27 mark. Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) made the third three pointer of the period to cap off a 13-6 lead for the Yellow Jackets in the first ten minutes.
  • The second period saw momentum swings throughout the entire period. Shawnise Campbell made a lay-up to pull Shenandoah within four points with 8:05 left, with RMC still leading 14-10. The Lemon and Black answered with back-to-back lay-ups by Elkins and Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa) to push the lead to 18-10, halfway through the period. The Hornets ended the final two minutes with five straight points to pull within three points (23-20) at the halftime break.
  • Shenandoah took its first lead of the game on a Campbell jumper with 7:24 left in the third period 24-23. Both teams exchanged the lead throughout the remainder of the period, with neither team gaining more than a four point lead. Emily Williams pushed the Hornet lead to 40-36 with seconds remaining in the period to bring the game to the final ten minutes.
  • The Yellow Jackets did not quit, as Elkins orchestrated a five point scoring burst to begin the fourth period, giving RMC a 41-40 lead with 6:27 left. Elkins split a pair of free throws with 3:55 left to give the Yellow Jackets a 44-43 lead. Shenandoah answered with back-to-back jumpers by Kayla Maxson and Greene to give the Hornets the lead back at 47-44 with 2:15 left in the game. Randolph-Macon had the ball coming out of a timeout with 18 seconds left, but tough perimeter defense by SU caused RMC not to get a good look at the basket, as the Hornets took home a 47-44 victory. Elkins ended the period scoring all of Randolph-Macon's eight points in the final period.
