Defense Stifles Southern Maine as Women's Hoops Wins 6th Straight


SAN JUAN, P.R. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball used suffocating defense to hold Southern Maine to 26.7 percent shooting and also saw Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) record her third straight double-double en route to a 49-38 win. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon began the game on a 9-0 run that lasted over three minutes, as the Yellow Jackets went perfect from the floor during the stretch. Kagey was the leader of the run, scoring four points. Lucy Wiles got the Huskies on the scoreboard with two free throws with 6:12 remaining in the first period. The Lemon and Black would end up going 6-of-9 from the field (66.7 percent) and used the early run to take a 16-5 lead into the second period.  
  • In the second period, Southern Maine were the ones to start hot on offense, nailing back-to-back three pointers to pull the deficit to 16-11. The Yellow Jackets answered with back-to-back baskets by Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and Kagey to push the lead back to 20-11 with 4:15 left in the period. The Huskies were able to pull within four points in the final four minutes, but two late period baskets by Randolph-Macon gave them a 24-16 going into halftime.  
  • The Lemon and Black saw more duo success by Kagey and Park to begin the third period, scoring the first six points for a 30-16 lead with 6:22 on the clock. Southern Maine was never able to get the deficit within ten points, as Kagey and Park accounted for all 12 points for Randolph-Macon in the period. The Yellow Jackets took a commanding 36-23 lead into the final ten minutes.  
  • In the fourth period, both teams traded baskets for the majority of the ten minutes. McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) led the way with four points, as Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Kagey each contributed three points to the final thirteen Yellow Jacket points. Southern Maine would outscore the Lemon and Black 15-13 in the fourth period. Randolph-Macon used a strong first period to take home a 49-38 win in a defensive slugfest.   
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 33.3 percent from the floor, as Southern Maine knocked down 26.7 percent of its shots.  
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Huskies 43-to-17 in the entire game. 
  • Kagey recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds. The senior also added two assists and a block to her scoreline in the game. 
  • Matheny contributed another productive game off the bench for the Yellow Jackets. The junior scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds. 
  • Park ended the afternoon with nine points and three rebounds.  
  • Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) scored four points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.  
For the Record:
  • Randolph-Macon has now won nine out of its first ten games this season. The 9-1 record is the best start in the first ten games since the 2018-19 season.
