Farmer's Goal Sends Nunnally into Frenzy; Women's Soccer to Semifinal Match

11/5/2024 9:45:00 PM

Box Score
ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's soccer team clinched its first berth to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinal match since 2019 with an emotional 1-0 victory over Guilford.

The Basics

Score: (4) Randolph-Macon 1, (5) Guilford 0
Venue: Ashland, Va. / Randolph-Macon College / Nunnally Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (11-4-4, 7-3-0 ODAC); Guilford (12-5-2, 6-3-1 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • Guilford dominated the majority of the first half with constant pressure in the Yellow Jacket defensive zone. Randolph-Macon was able to get its shots on goal early in the first 45 minutes to total three. The Quakers managed to send seven shots at goal, but Zoe Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was able to stop each one of them to keep Guilford off the board.
  • The Lemon and Black was in bend but not break mode defensively in the first half. Guilford would carry the momentum into the halftime break, but the overall score of the game would sit at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
  • The Quakers kept their attack going for the first twenty minutes of the second half. Both teams were struggling to find the back of the net throughout the game and a yellow card given to Guilford in the 68th minute would slow down the pace of the game.
  • Randolph-Macon would use the stoppage in the game to its advantage for the final portion of the match. Ariel Farmer (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) was subbed in and would score the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute to erupt the home fans at Nunnally field.
  • In the final twenty minutes, most of the credit would turn to the defensive backline of the Yellow Jackets. Maddie Stubblefield (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville), Kelly Rogers (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle), Grace Turney (Dayton, Md./River Hill), Hollis Keenan (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and Sammie Hoefs (New Market, Md./Linganore) played huge minutes down the stretch to keep the lead safe for Randolph-Macon. The Lemon and Black would hold on to the 1-0 score to move on in the ODAC playoffs.
Inside the Numbers

  • The Quakers held a 12-to-6 shots on frame advantage in the match.
