Matheny Records Double-Double to Propel Women's Hoops over Wilkes


SALEM, Va. - The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team saw McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) recorded her second double-double of the season to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 63-45 victory over Wilkes. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon answered the Colonels' three point basket to begin the game with seven straight points to take an early 7-3 advantage with 6:36 left. Dana Wartzenluft got Wilkes within one point with a three-pointer with 3:11 remaining to cut the deficit to 11-10. Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) and Matheny both made back-to-back baskets to push the Yellow Jackets lead back to 15-10 and two Wilkes' Yamirelis Matos free throws with seconds left put the first period score at 15-12 in favor of Randolph-Macon.  
  • The Colonels opened up the second period with a basket by Maliyah Warren to pull the deficit down to one at 15-14. Randolph-Macon would get its offense in a groove, scoring eight of the next ten points to take a 23-16 lead with 3:14 until halftime. Matheny made a jumper with six seconds remaining to give the Lemon and Black their largest lead of the game at 27-18 going into halftime. 
  • The Yellow Jackets began the third period on a 9-1 run, highlighted by a Bruce three ball to push the lead to 36-19 with 6:45 on the clock. Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) capped off a dominant period by Randolph-Macon with a three-pointer with :27 seconds left on the clock, pushing the lead to 50-28 with ten minutes to play. 
  • In the fourth period, Matheny made a jump shot to give the Yellow Jackets their biggest lead of the game at 57-33 with 5:44 left. Randolph-Macon ended the game with six straight points by Rachael Anderson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) and Emily Olsen (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) to give the Lemon and Black a 63-35 win over Wilkes.  
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 36.2 percent from the floor, as Wilkes knocked down 23.6 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Colonels 48-to-40 in the entire game.  
  • Matheny recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The junior also added to her line with three assists and three blocked shots. 
  • Bruce ended the afternoon with seven points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.  
  • Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll), Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day and Miller each had six points for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) pulled down eight rebounds to add to her five point output.

Randolph-Macon is back in action to host the RMC Tip-Off Classic in Crenshaw Gym on Nov. 22-23. The Yellow Jackets will take on Dickinson College at 6:00 p.m.
