Women's Volleyball Totals 14 Blocks in Twin Bill at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Tex.  Randolph-Macon Women's Volleyball totaled 22 block assists against Southwestern as the Yellow Jackets competed in two matches in San Antonio on Friday afternoon.

How it Happened vs. Southwestern
  • RMC came out strong in the first set, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage. Southwestern fought back to bring the score within one multiple times, but the Yellow Jackets held off the Pirates. RMC maintained the lead through 19-16, when the Yellow Jackets promptly won six straight points to close the set, winning 25-16. RMC held SU to hitting just 0.07 with 10 errors in the first frame.
  • The Pirates flipped the script in the second set, doubling up the Yellow Jackets early with a 10-5 lead. Down by six points, RMC used a 3-0 run to cut the deficit in half, but SU responded with one of their own to stretch the lead back out. The two teams split the final four points of the set as the Pirates won 25-19.
  • Both teams traded stretches of three straight points to open the third set and went back-and-forth until it was tied 10-10. From that point, Southwestern won 12 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 22-13 lead. RMC won three of the next four points, but SU took the final two to win 25-16.
  • SU took a 7-4 lead in the opening points of the fourth set before RMC used a 3-0 run to knot the score at seven. The Pirates responded with a 5-1 run that swung momentum to their side. The lead ballooned out to 17-10, and then even further to 22-11. RMC won two straight points but SU closed out the match with a 25-13 win.
Inside the Numbers vs. Southwestern
  • RMC totaled 12 total blocks with 22 block assists. SU had just six total blocks.
  • Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) registered a career-best eight block assists while adding a solo block.
  • Carlie Mariano (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) also had a career-high with six block assists. She has 12 block assists in the last three matches.
  • Maddy DeCandido (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) finished with 23 digs to lead the team.
  • Allison Lach (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) was the lone Yellow Jackets player with double-digit kills, totaling 12 with a .281 hitting percentage.
How it Happened vs. Texas Lutheran
  • Texas Lutheran took control early in the first, jumping out to a 12-6 lead, which nearly doubled to an 18-8 lead after a stretch of five straight points helped the Bulldogs grow the lead. TLU led by nine at 22-13, but RMC rallied with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two points. The Bulldogs won three of the final five points to stop the RMC momentum and win the first set 25-22.
  • In the second set, the momentum stayed on the side of TLU, as they slowly built a 14-7 lead and continued to grow that lead throughout the remainder of the set. The Bulldogs never won more than three points in a row, but they rolled through the second set to win 25-12.
  • The Bulldogs began the third set by winning four of the first five points, but the Yellow Jackets came back to cut the lead to one at 6-5 before TLU widened their lead back to five. Like the second set, TLU slowly grew their lead throughout the remainder of the frame, earning the sweep with a 25-18 win.

  • RMC will play their final match in San Antonio on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against the host, Trinity (Texas).
