Men's Soccer Hangs Tough with #22 Virginia Wesleyan


VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team fought for an entire 90 minute match, but two late goals by #22 Virginia Wesleyan proved to be the difference in a 3-1 road loss.

How it Happened
  • Virginia Wesleyan broke the ice in the 17th minute, as Alex Moody found the back of the net on an assisted goal by Gio Zizza to give the Marlins the lead. 
  • The Yellow Jackets responded three minutes later with a goal by Davian Jackson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) that was set up with the assist of Jake Hall (Mount Airy, Ga./Tallulah Falls School) to tie up the game at 1-1. 
  • The final 25 minutes of the first half saw most of the action in the middle of the field. There was only one shot on frame in the final 25 minutes of the half that Adam Braithwaite (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) snagged to help keep the game tied at 1-1 at halftime. 
  • The Yellow Jackets would be tested to begin the second half, as Braithwaite was called on to make four saves in the first thirty minutes to keep the game level at 1-1.  
  • The Marlins netted a crucial goal in the 79th minute that was scored by Zach Bittler and assisted by Tyler Waddell to take back the lead 2-1. 
  • Bittler added to the Virginia Wesleyan lead in the 82nd minute to give the Marlins much needed cushion at home.  
  • The two late goals by Virginia Wesleyan proved to be the difference in the game, as the Yellow Jackets would fall in a tough road contest 3-1. 
Inside the Numbers
  • Virginia Wesleyan had 24 shots in the game, compared to the three that Randolph-Macon tallied. The Marlins held a 10-to-1 advantage with shots on frame. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan held the advantage 9-to-3 in corner opportunities in the 90 minute game.  
  • Jackson scored his second goal of his sophomore season.
  • Hall tallied his second assist of his second season at Randolph-Macon. 
  • Braithwaite made seven saves in 90 minutes for the Yellow Jackets. The senior has made 61 saves this season to mark the most in his career, besting his freshman year mark of 56 saves.
