How it Happened
  • RMC started the match strong, taking a 4-1 lead, that ballooned into an 11-6 advantage, forcing an Averett timeout. After the Cougars won the first two points out of the timeout, the Yellow Jackets answered with four straight to make it a seven-point lead at 15-8. RMC defended the net well, totaling six block assists in the opening set to grow the lead further and take set one, 25-11.
  • The first six points of set two went in favor of the home side to force an Averett timeout. RMC would win one more point out of the timeout to make the score 7-0 before the Cougars broke the run. From that point, Averett won six of the next eight points, getting back into the set by trimming the deficit to two. Out of an RMC timeout, AU earned two straight points to tie the score at nine before RMC found their footing again. The Cougars took their first lead of the match at 11-10 and pushed the lead out to 14-11 to force a second timeout from the Yellow Jackets. Out of the timeout it was all RMC, winning eight straight points to take a five-point lead. Seven of the next eight points went in favor of the Cougars to put them in the lead, 22-21 but RMC reset to win four of the final five points to take a back-and-forth set two, 25-23.
  • Averett started the third set with momentum, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. RMC took control after being down 6-4 to take a 14-8 lead. That lead remained as the Yellow Jackets let 18-13, but Averett rallied to take a 22-21 advantage. After RMC took two of the next three points to tie it, Averett finished the set, winning the final two points to avoid the sweep.
  • The fourth set began with RMC taking a 3-1 lead but eight of the next nine points went to Averett to give them a 9-4 advantage. The Lemon and Black worked their way back to cut the deficit to one at 12-11. Each time RMC tried to tie the score up, Averett would counter by extending the lead back out. After the Cougars led 21-19, they went on a 3-0 run to sure up the fourth set, winning 25-20, forcing a set five.
  • RMC opened the fifth set with a 5-3 lead and immediately took control, winning six of the next seven points to give them a commanding 11-5 lead. Averett was only able to win two more points the rest of the set as RMC closed out the set to win the match.
