How it Happened
  • The two sides split the opening eight points of the first set before EMU took the lead with a 7-2 run to make the score 11-6. The Royals held off any run from RMC, as the Yellow Jackets couldn't string together more than two points in a row until they won four of five points to make the score 19-17. EMU answered by winning six of the final seven points to take the opening set, 25-18.
  • After EMU won the first two points of the second set, RMC won the next three. The two teams traded points until EMU led 12-11. That was answered by an 8-2 run by the Yellow Jackets to put them ahead by five at 19-14. The lead was extended to 21-15, but the Royals didn't back down, igniting a stretch of six straight points to tie the score at 21. RMC was able to close out the set by winning four of the final five points to claim a 25-22 win.
  • The Royals won four of the first five points in the third stanza, but RMC seized momentum with a 6-0 run. EMU cut the deficit to one at 14-13, but the Yellow Jackets rattled off seven of the next nine points that gave them a 21-15 advantage. A pair of 3-0 runs by EMU were not enough as RMC took set three, 25-22.
  • Once again, EMU came out strong in the fourth set, winning the first three points. RMC trailed by two before the Royals jumped out to a 17-8 lead to give them full control in the set. RMC would win four of the next five points, but EMU bounced back to win four straight. The Yellow Jackets' comeback attempt was short-lived, as the Royals took set four, 25-16, to force set five.
  • EMU controlled most of the fifth set, going on three separate runs of three points or more. Those runs helped them extend the lead out to 14-8. RMC showed fight with a stretch of four straight points before the Royals closed out the win.
