How it Happened:
- Averett held a slight advantage to begin the first set, leading 9-7 before an 11-1 RMC run flipped the script and gave the Yellow Jackets a commanding lead. AU cut the lead to 5, trailing 22-17 but RMC grabbed the final three points of the set to take the first set.
- The second set was tight throughout, with the largest lead of the set being a three-point lead, once by both sides. After RMC led 7-4, the lead changed hands multiple times and was eventually captured by AU late in the set and took the final two points to take set two, 26-24.
- Averett seemed to have momentum in the third set, holding a 12-8 lead, but RMC ignited an 8-1 run to take the lead and not look back, taking a pivotal set three, 25-19.
- The Lemon and Black kept the momentum on their side to begin the fourth set, pushing out to a 9-3 lead in a blink. Averett gradually came back and cut the lead to one at 17-16 and then again at 19-18. A kill by Grace Parker (Andover, N.J./Pope John XXIII) started a 6-1 rally to end the set and give RMC the match win.
By the Numbers:
- Mia Zazzero (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) was a consistent force, totaling nine kills with zero errors and getting four blocks at the net.
- Kaitlyn Kaplan (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) and Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) combined for 49 of RMC's 54 assists on the night.
