12/10/2023 2:31:00 PM

RICHMOND, Va. – Randolph-Macon senior quarterback Drew Campanale (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) was voted the recipient of the Lanier Award as the top non-Division I player in the state of Virginia.

The Lanier Award, sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond, was announced on WTVR-TV 6 on Saturday, Dec. 9. A statewide media panel voted on the award, with Campanale receiving 14 of 15 first-place votes.

Campanale helped the Yellow Jackets win their first 13 games, a program record for victories in a season, and reach the semifinals of the NCAA Championship. RMC hosted three of their four NCAA Playoff contests. The Yellow Jackets won the ODAC title with a 7-0 conference mark. RMC has captured 14 ODAC championships, the most in conference history.

During the regular season, Campanale was third in the nation in yards per attempt at 11.9. He was fourth in passing efficiency at 202.2, fifth in passing yards per completion at 16.7 and 11th in completion percentage at 71%. The RMC offense was first in third down conversion percentage at 61%, third in Red Zone offense at 94%, sixth in scoring offense at 50.9 and seventh in time of possession at 34:19.

Campanale was ODAC Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and All-ODAC First Team. He was All-Region Second Team by D3football.com.

During his two-year career, Campanale had 47 passing touchdowns, the second-highest total in program history. He had 4,871 career passing yards, fifth in school history.

Campanale is the third Yellow Jacket to win the Lanier Award, joining Will McGhee (2013) and Presley Egbers (2020). He is the seventh quarterback to capture the award and the 14th player from the ODAC.

This is the 20th Lanier Award to be presented.  For the first 14 years of the Dudley Award (1990-2003), one state player-of-the-year award was presented with players from all state colleges considered.  As Virginia and Virginia Tech combined to win 12 of the first 14 Dudley Awards, a second award to honor those from the NCAA Division II, III; NAIA, and USCAA levels was established in 2004.

Willie Lanier's name was attached to the award in 2009. Lanier was born in Clover but raised in Richmond. He had an 11-year NFL career, all with the Kansas City Chiefs, and was a member of the KC team that won Super Bowl IV over Minnesota in January 1970. Lanier is enshrined in both the NFL Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame, following an outstanding collegiate career at Morgan State.
