First Half Goal by Spangler Not Enough Against Eagles

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's soccer team hosted Bridgewater for a pivotal midweek conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took the lead early but two second half goals by the Eagles sealed the win 2-1.

How it Happened
  • Bridgewater started the game hot in the offensive zone for the first seven minutes, having three corner opportunities. The best chance to take the early advantage was a shot from Katherine King that was scooped off the ground by Zoe Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian).
  • The defensive back line of Abigail Pesut (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellum), Charlotte Bradshaw (Boydton, Va./Bluestone), Grace Turney (Dayton, Md./River Hill) and Lily Alexander (Wake Forest, N.C./Wakefield) played an impressive first 20 minutes to keep the Eagles out of goal. Bridgewater had six corners and the Yellow Jacket defense managed to get the ball out of the box. 
  • Randolph-Macon broke through in the 27th minute as Ally Spangler (Daleville, Va./Lord Botetourt) made a run at goal and slid it past the Eagles' Carlee Gaboury to give RMC a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Eagles were threatening as Alicia Keo sent in a good ball to goal in the 36th minute, but Long dove to her left to keep the lead for the Lemon and Black going into halftime. 
  • Bridgewater continued with a hard offensive attack to start the second half as Hannah England took a Laura Narby pass and finished it in goal. The Eagles put up ten shots on goal before the 11th went through, to tie up the game at 1-1 with 40 minutes left. 
  • Skyler Daum found the back of the net in the 66th minute as she pin-balled the Keo pass past Long to give BC the lead 2-1.
  • Randolph-Macon had a huge opportunity to to tie the game back up as Kelly Rogers (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) almost snuck it past Gaboury in the 77th minute. 
Inside the Numbers
  • Bridgewater outshot the Yellow Jackets 36-to-12. The Yellow Jackets put six shots on frame to BC's twenty. 
  • The Eagles had 15 corner opportunities, as Randolph-Macon only had three corner opportunities.
  • Spangler scored her second goal of the season for the Lemon and Black.  
  • Long played a solid game in goal for RMC, making 18 saves in 90 minutes.
