R-MC Field Hockey Drops 2OT Battle Despite Late Heroics

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon field hockey team competed in their final non-conference matchup of the season on Tuesday night. The comeback fell short, despite late heroics in Fredericksburg.

The Basics:

Score: Mary Washington 3, Randolph-Macon 2 (2OT)

Location/Venue: Fredericksburg, Va./University of Mary Washington/Battleground Turf

Records: Randolph-Macon (3-6, 0-0 ODAC), Mary Washington (4-4, 0-0 Coast 2 Coast)

How it Happened:

  • R-MC came out on the offensive attack, outshooting the Eagles in the first frame. However, UMW got on the board first, which proved to be the only goal of the first 30 minutes.
  • Both teams netted a goal in the third quarter. The Eagles struck first, but sophomore midfielder Alaina McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) kept the Jackets in it with a goal of her own to cut the lead to one.
  • With just 19 seconds remaining, senior midfielder Catherine Magill (Moseley, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) knotted the score at two on an assist from sophomore forward Mia Kuhnle (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), sending the game into overtime.
  • The Yellow Jackets outshot the Eagles in the first overtime, but nothing to show for it on either side. In the second overtime, UMW netted the game winning goal just 31 seconds in.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The shot counter was even at 12 a side, but R-MC led the shots on goal category 9-8.
  • Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Seiler (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) kept the Yellow Jackets in it with five saves in the cage.
  • Alaina McCoy netted her fourth goal of the season, which is good for the team lead in the category.
  • Catherine Magill's late heroics give her three goals on the season, all three of which coming in the last four games.
  • Mia Kuhnle's assist on Magill's goal gives her two for the year, adding to her strong performance this week.
