The Series: R-MC leads 2-1

On Dec. 29, 1967, R-MC edged Marietta 84-79 in the Ft. Eustis Invitational Tournament. On Dec. 29, 1999, the Pioneers topped the Yellow Jackets    84-75 in the Rees Jewelers Christmas Classic. Earlier this season, on Nov. 20, R-MC won 82-74 at Marietta.

R-MC in the Final Four

The Yellow Jackets are making their third trip to the Final Four. R-MC beat North Alabama in the 1977 Division II semifinals before falling to Chattanooga in the title game. R-MC lost to eventual national champion Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the 2010 Division III semifinals.

 

R-MC in NCAA Tournament

R-MC is making its 27th appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and owns a 28-30 tourney mark. The Yellow Jackets made nine trips to the Division II Tournament from 1965-1985, going 6-14. This is the 18th trip to the Division III Tournament from 1990 to 2022, going 22-16.

Three Straight Sweet Sixteens

There were just two teams to reach the Sweet Sixteen in each of the past three NCAA Division III Tournaments: Randolph-Macon and Christopher Newport. The Yellow Jackets and Captains went 2-0 in tourneys in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony led all scorers with 23 points as No. 1 R-MC downed No. 13 WPI 76-53 in the Sectional Finals of the NCAA Tournament.

How it Happened:

•   The Engineers had the first field goal of the game before a layup by Miles Mallory quickly tied the contest. WPI jumped ahead 6-2 before Anthony had seven points in a 20-6 run, capped by consecutive three-pointers by Will Coble and Vincent Payne, as the Yellow Jackets took a 22-12 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. For more than nine minutes, the R-MC defense held WPI to one field goal. The Engineers cut the deficit to five before two treys by Anthony highlighted a 10-4 spurt as the Yellow Jackets led 38-27 with 3:20 left. WPI again cut the deficit to five before Anthony had a layup for the final points of the first period as R-MC led 40-33. Anthony paced the Yellow Jackets with 15 points.

•   WPI had the first bucket of the second half to pull within five before Daniel Mbangue had five points and Coble canned another trey for eight straight points by the home team and a 48-35 advantage with 15 minutes remaining. Ian Robertson hit three treys and Anthony added two triples as the overall run was 25-6 over 14 minutes as the Yellow Jackets took a 65-41 lead with five minutes to go. After a three-point play by WPI, Mallory had a layup and Anthony sank two free throws as R-MC took its largest lead of 25 at 69-44 with four minutes remaining. Can Dalli hit a long trey to cap the scoring and make the final 76-53.

•   The Yellow Jackets had two score in double figures. Anthony put up 23 and Mallory added 11.

ODAC Regular-Season Title

With its victory over Hampden-Sydney, R-MC won its fifth straight ODAC regular season crown in a full season.

R-MC has won at least a share of the ODAC regular-season crown 16 times:

R-MC had three players named to the All-Tournament Team. Buzz Anthony was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Miles Mallory and Josh Talbert joined Anthony on the All-Tournament Team.

Daunting Defense

R-MC is first in the ODAC and second in the nation in scoring defense at 58.8 points per game. In four NCAA Tournament contests, the Yellow Jackets have allowed an average of 57.6 points per game, second in the tourney field. The Yellow Jackets were first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest.   R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game.

The Yellow Jackets are first in the ODAC and fourth in the country in scoring margin at 19.1. In the NCAA Tournament, R-MC has a scoring margin of 26.0. That is the top mark of all teams in the field. The Yellow Jackets won both sectional games by 23 points.

 

Career Steals & Assists

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 252 career steals. He has 783 career assists, surpassing the ODAC record of 680 held by Tim Crawford of EMU (1977-81) and program record of Paul Jez (1971-75).

R-MC is averaging 10.2 turnovers per game, first in the ODAC and 12th in the nation. The Yellow Jackets have averaged 8.2 turnovers in four NCAA tourney games. A season ago, R-MC led the ODAC and was seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. R-MC has risen to first in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.81. Marietta dropped to second at 1.78. In four NCAA tourney games, the Yellow Jackets have an assist/turnover ratio of 2.48, the top mark in the field. R-MC was first in the league and seventh in the country a season ago in assist/turnover ratio at 1.64. Last season, R-MC was tops in the league and 15th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.3.

Josh Merkel earned his 200th career victory with the home win over Guilford. He won 66 games in four years at Salisbury and has won 146 in seven years at R-MC.

R-MC is first in the ODAC in total blocks with 131. Miles Mallory is first in the conference and sixth in the country with 85 total blocked shots and 10th with 2.66 blocks per game. He leads the tourney field with 16 blocks. Mallory had a season-high seven blocks in the win over Lynchburg, matching his career best. Mallory now owns the program record for career blocks with 184.

With the victory over WPI, R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 48. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66. Seniors DaQuan Morris and Ian Robertson became the first class to go undefeated in Crenshaw, going 45-0 at home. Fifth-year seniors Buzz Anthony and David Funderburg are 55-2 at home over the past five seasons.
