The Yellow Jackets are 4-1 against teams in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. R-MC defeated Hood, Emory, Marietta and Averett. The lone loss for the Yellow Jackets this season was a one-point defeat in overtime at Christopher Newport.

R-MC made its 27th appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and owns a 26-30 tourney mark. The Yellow Jackets made nine trips to the Division II Tournament from 1965-1985, going 6-14. This is the 18th trip to the Division III Tournament from 1990 to 2022, going 20-16.

Three Straight Sweet Sixteens
There have been just two teams reach the Sweet Sixteen in each of the past three NCAA Division III Tournaments: Randolph-Macon and Christopher Newport. The Yellow Jackets and Captains went 2-0 in tourneys in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

Last Time Out
Josh Talbert led all scorers with 25 points and Miles Mallory recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds as R-MC defeated Babson 67-51 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
How it Happened:
• Daniel Mbangue has a layup for the Yellow Jackets to start the scoring. Mallory scored twice in the lane to give R-MC an 8-4 edge with 14:20 left in the first half. The Beavers tied the game at 12-12 before buckets by Mbangue and Talbert put the Yellow Jackets up four at 16-12 with 8:40 left. BC would use a 9-2 spurt to take a 21-18 advantage before a three-pointer by Will Coble tied it at 21-21 with just under six minutes left. The Beavers held a 29-27 edge before Talbert tallied seven straight and Mallory scored inside to put R-MC up 36-29 with 40 seconds left. BC hit a trey just before the horn and R-MC led 36-32 at the break. Talbert had 15 points in the first half and Mallory added eight.
• DaQuan Morris buried a three-pointer and Buzz Anthony hit a jumper as R-MC went up 41-32 two minutes into the second period. A one-hander by David Funderburg capped a 15-4 start of the second half as the Yellow Jackets led 51-36 with 13:10 remaining. BC had an 8-2 run to pull within nine at 53-44 before four points by Talbert and three by Mallory gave R-MC a 60-44 lead with just under six minutes left. A pair of free throws by Anthony game the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 67-50 with 1:03 remaining. BC hit a foul shot in the last minute to make the final 67-51.

• The Yellow Jackets had three score in double figures. Talbert had 25, Mallory added 15 and Anthony put up 11.

With its victory over Hampden-Sydney, R-MC won its fifth straight ODAC regular season crown in a full season.

Daunting Defense
R-MC is first in the ODAC and second in the nation in scoring defense at 58.6 points per game. Over the past 12 contests, opponents have scored an average of 56.4 points per game. R-MC has held eight of its past nine opponents to 60 points or less, including each of the three foes in the ODAC Tournament and both opponents in the NCAA tourney. The Yellow Jackets were first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest. R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game.

Three of the top four teams in the nation in scoring defense will be in action in Ashland this weekend. Rensselaer is first at 57.5 ppg, R-MC is second at 58.6 ppg and WPI is fourth at 60.0
ODAC Player of the Week
Buzz Anthony was named ODAC Player of the Week on Feb. 14 for the third time this season. Anthony averaged 28.5 points and 7.0 assists in two victories, shooting 69% from the floor and 68.4% on treys. He had 25 points and eight assists in an 81-50 win at Bridgewater, including 20 points in the second half. Anthony matched his career high with 32 points in a 102-60 Senior Day win over Shenandoah at Crenshaw Gym.
Bevo Francis Award Watch List
Buzz Anthony and Miles Mallory are both on the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List. The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA, NCCAA). Marcus Azor of UMass Dartmouth is also on the Top 50 Watch List.

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 243 career steals. He has 767 career assists, surpassing the ODAC record of 680 held by Tim Crawford of EMU (1977-81) and program record of Paul Jez (1971-75).

R-MC is averaging 10.4 turnovers per game, first in the ODAC and 13th in the nation. The Yellow Jackets have averaged 8.4 turnovers in the past 10 games. A season ago, R-MC led the ODAC and was seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. R-MC is tops in the conference and second in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.77.
