R-MC leads 77-38 since 1956
The Yellow Jackets have won eight straight, 21 of the past 22 and 35 of the past 37 meetings with the Maroons. R-MC won 62-50 earlier this season on Dec. 4 at Roanoke when the Maroons were ranked No. 9 in the nation. The Yellow Jackets won 77-71 a season ago in Salem in the semifinals of the 2021 ODAC Tournament. R-MC defeated RC twice two seasons ago, winning 52-42 at Roanoke during the regular season and rallying for a 60-59 win in the semifinals of the 2020 ODAC Tournament. RC has not played in Ashland since Feb. 2, 2019, a 71-51 win for R-MC.

With the victory over Guilford, R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 41. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

Josh Merkel earned his 200th career victory with the win over Guilford. He won 66 games in four years at Salisbury & has won 134 in seven years at R-MC.
Last Time Out
Miles Mallory scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as R-MC battled past second-place Guilford 60-56.
How it Happened:
The Quakers scored the first five points before Ian Robertson nailed a trey for the Yellow Jackets. GC led 7-3 before triples by DaQuan Morris and Will Coble gave R-MC its first lead at 9-7 with 13:25 left in the first half. The Quakers held a slim 17-16 edge before a trey by Coble and two buckets by Mallory put R-MC up 23-17 with 6:40 left. GC closed to within two before a layup by David Funderburg and a jumper by Mallory pushed the lead to six at 27-21 with 3:40 left. GC scored six straight to tie it before a layup by Buzz Anthony put R-MC on top 29-27 with 40 seconds left. GC would have the final bucket of the period and the game was tied 29-29 at the break. Mallory had a layup to start the second half. GC had a one-point lead before a triple by Coble put R-MC on top 36-34 with 15:40 left. GC scored seven straight to go up 41-36 before a pair of three-point plays by Mallory sparked a 13-5 spurt as the home team went up 49-46 with seven minutes left. GC fought back and took a 53-51 edge with four minutes left. Mallory hit a free throw and converted another three-point play as R-MC went up 55-53 with three minutes left. A three-pointer by GC put them up 56-55 with 2:45 on the clock. Josh Talbert powered in for a layup to put R-MC on top for good at 57-56 with 2:25 left. On the next possession for GC, Anthony blocked a shot, grabbed the rebound and passed to Talbert, who fed Mallory for a layup to make it 59-56 with 54.5 seconds left. Mbangue grabbed a rebound on a missed GC shot and was fouled. He hit one free throw to make the final 60-56.
Last Meeting
Josh Talbert had season highs with 16 points and five steals as R-MC used a 19-3 run to start the second half in a 62-50 ODAC victory at Roanoke.
How it Happened:
- David Funderburg had a layup to cap an 8-2 start for the Yellow Jackets three minutes into the contest. The Maroons eventually tied it at 10-10 before a layup by Talbert put R-MC up 12-10 six minutes in. RC used an 8-2 spurt to take an 18-14 edge with nine minutes remaining in the first half. A pair of three-pointers by Buzz Anthony gave the visitors a 20-18 advantage with 5:25 left. After the Maroons leveled the score at 20-20, Will Coble nailed a trey to put R-MC ahead for good and Daniel Mbangue made two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a 25-20 lead with 3:15 remaining. RC outscored R-MC 5-2 the rest of the way as the Yellow Jackets led 27-25 at halftime.
- A layup by Funderburg capped a 19-3 run to start the second half as the Yellow Jackets took a 46-28 lead with 13:15 left. R-MC maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Maroons closed to within a dozen before a layup by Anthony gave the Yellow Jackets a 56-42 advantage with 5:50 remaining. After a bucket by RC, Funderburg scored twice to make it 60-44 with two minutes left. The Maroons cut it to 10 before a dunk by Talbert with 25 seconds left completed the scoring as R-MC registered the 62-50 victory. The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Talbert scored 16, Anthony added 14 and Funderburg put in 12. It was the fourth win for R-MC over a ranked team in its past six games.

Buzz Anthony was named ODAC Player of the Week on Jan. 31 for the second time this season. Anthony averaged 18.3 points and 7.0 assists in three ODAC wins last week. He had 20 points and nine assists in 28 minutes in a home win over Bridgewater. Anthony had 15 points and nine assists in a victory at Hampden-Sydney. He had 20 points in a road win at Washington and Lee.
