ODAC Regular-Season Title

With its victory over Hampden-Sydney, R-MC won its fifth straight ODAC regular season crown in a full season.

R-MC had won at least a share of the ODAC regular-season crown 16 times:

 

1989-90, 1990-91, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2008-09, 2010-11, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2021-22

 

Last Time Out

Josh Talbert scored 16 points and Miles Mallory added 15 as R-MC won 72-66 at Guilford, its first win in Greensboro since 2008.

How it Happened:

•   The Quakers had the first bucket of the game before Buzz Anthony hit a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 edge. GC led 4-3 before Mallory hit a jumper and a trey in a 7-0 run as   R-MC went up 10-4 with 16:40 left in the first half. Triples by DaQuan Morris and Will Coble gave the visitors an 18-8 advantage with 13:30 remaining. Treys by Morris and Ian Robertson were followed by a jumper from David Funderburg as the Yellow Jackets took a 26-10 lead with 11:20 left. A triple by Talbert grew the lead to 17 at 31-14 with 9:40 remaining. A three-pointer by Anthony made it 47-29 with 1:45 left. GC would hit a free throw as the Yellow Jackets led 47-30 at the half. R-MC hit 11 of 15 three-point attempts.

•   Daniel Mbangue had the first basket of the second half as the advantage grew to 49-30. A free throw by Mbangue game R-MC a 68-53 lead with 4:18 remaining before the Quakers had a 10-point run to pull within five at 68-63 with 50 seconds left. Talbert went 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the final 13 seconds to secure the 72-66 win.

By The Numbers:

•   The Yellow Jackets had just two score in double figures. Talbert put up 16 and Mallory added 15. Morris and Robertson both had nine off the bench.

•   R-MC shot a season-best 56.5% on three-pointers (13-23).

•   Mbangue led R-MC on the glass with six rebounds.

•   Anthony topped the victors with nine assists, while Talbert dished out six.

•   R-MC committed just five turnovers.

Last Meeting

Buzz Anthony scored 25 points, including 20 in the second half, and Miles Mallory recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds as R-MC closed the game on a 29-6 run in winning 81-50 at Bridgewater.

How it Happened:

•   Anthony hit a jumper 20 seconds into the contest to start the scoring. The Eagles put up the next eight points before Will Coble buried a pair of three-pointers to knot the score at 8-8 with 15:45 left in the first half. BC had the next four points before two free throws by Josh Talbert stopped the short run. The Eagles pushed their lead to 18-12 before six straight points by Talbert tied it at 18-18 with 7:45 remaining. The score was level at 26-26 before Anthony hit a trey to spark an 8-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets would lead 34-28 at the half. Talbert led R-MC with 10 points, while Coble added nine.

•   BC had a 5-3 start to the second half to pull within four at 37-33 before Anthony hit three triples to spark a 13-4 run that was capped by an Anthony layup as R-MC went up 50-37 with 13:45 left. The Eagles closed to within eight at 52-44 before three layups Mallory and five points by Anthony made up an 11-0 spurt as the visitors took a 63-44 advantage with 7:35 remaining. That started a 29-6 run for the Yellow Jackets as the posted the 81-50 victory. The R-MC defense held BC to one field goal in the final 12:45.

By The Numbers:

•   The Yellow Jackets had four score in double figures. Along with 25 by Anthony and 16 by Mallory, Coble finished with 15 to match his career high and Talbert scored 14.

Win Streak

R-MC has won 18 straight games and 41 of its past 42 contests. The 18-game win streak is the second-longest in a single season and third overall. The Yellow Jackets won 25 straight during the 2014-15 season and 23 from the end of the 2019-20 season into the first six games of this season.

Fifth-year seniors Buzz Anthony and David Funderburg reached the 100-win plateau for their careers against BC. They now stand at 109 victories. Anthony has appeared in 122 games, while Funderburg has played in 115.

 

ODAC Player of the Week

Buzz Anthony was named ODAC Player of the Week on Feb. 14 for the third time this season. Anthony averaged 28.5 points and 7.0 assists in two victories, shooting 69% from the floor and 68.4% on treys. He had 25 points and eight assists in an 81-50 win at Bridgewater, including 20 points in the second half. Anthony matched his career high with 32 points in a 102-60 Senior Day win over Shenandoah at Crenshaw Gym.

 

Daunting Defense

R-MC is first in the ODAC and second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 59.1 points per game. Over the past seven contests, opponents have scored an average of 56.6 points per game. R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest. R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game.

 

Bevo Francis Award Watch List

Buzz Anthony and Miles Mallory are both on the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List. The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA, NCCAA).

 

Career Steals & Assists

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 227 career steals. He has 731 career assists, surpassing the ODAC record of 680 held by Tim Crawford of EMU (1977-81).

R-MC is averaging 10.4 turnovers per game, first in the ODAC and 14th in the nation. The Yellow Jackets have averaged 6.8 turnovers in the past five games. A season ago, R-MC led the ODAC and was seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. R-MC is tops in the conference and second in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.76. Josh Merkel earned his 200th career victory with the win over Guilford. He won 66 games in four years at Salisbury & has won 139 in seven years at R-MC.
