Series: R-MC leads 96-54 since 1956

The Yellow Jackets have won nine in a row, 13 of the past 15 and 16 of the past 19 encounters with the Tigers. R-MC won 83-63 earlier this year at H-SC. The Yellow Jackets won the lone meeting a season ago, posting a 79-65 victory in Ashland on Jan. 20, 2021. R-MC swept three games two seasons ago, winning at H-SC 82-64 on Nov. 23, winning 84-58 in Ashland on Feb. 19, and posting an 80-61 victory on Feb. 28 in the quarterfinals of the 2020 ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va. Josh Merkel is 11-2 against Hampden-Sydney.

Home Cookin'

With the victory over Shenandoah,       R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 43. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

 

Four Strong Years

Over the past four seasons, the Yellow Jackets are 89-7 overall (.927) and 47-2 in ODAC contests (.959).

 

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony matched his career high with 32 points on Senior Day as R-MC defeated Shenandoah 102-60.

How it Happened:

•   DaQuan Morris hit a three-pointer and Anthony had a triple and a layup as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 8-1 lead two minutes into the contest. The Hornets used a 9-1 spurt to level the score at 10-10 with 15 minutes left in the first half. Anthony had seven points and Ian Robertson had a pair of treys as part of a 33-8 run as R-MC took a 43-18 advantage with 3:15 remaining. Anthony hit another three-pointer and Morris sank two free throws as the Yellow Jackets led 48-22 at the break. Anthony had 15 points and Morris added eight for the home team.

•   Following a steal, Josh Talbert had a driving layup to push the lead to 27 at 55-28 with 16:20 remaining. A three-point play by Daniel Mbangue and a three-pointer by Will Coble extended the lead to 30 at 70-40 with 11:50 left. A triple by Anthony and a layup by Robertson made it 84-49 with 6:45 remaining. Coble hit two treys to take  R-MC to 100 points and Ash Ally had a layup for his first points of the season to make the final 102-60. 

By The Numbers:

•   The Yellow Jackets had four score in double figures. Along with 32 by Anthony, Coble had a career-best 20, Talbert finished with 12 and Morris added 11.

•   Anthony went 10 for 14 from the floor and 8 for 11 from beyond the arc. Over the past two games, he was 20-29 on field goals (69%) and 13 for 19 on three-pointers (68%).

•   Coble had career highs with seven field goals and six three-pointers. He was 6 for 9 from beyond the arc.

Last Meeting

DaQuan Morris hit seven three-pointers for a career-high 21 points as R-MC closed the game on a 40-13 run over the final 15 minutes for an 83-63 ODAC win at Hampden-Sydney.

How it Happened:

The Tigers scored the first four points of the game before Ian Robertson nailed a trey to put the Yellow Jackets on the board. Daniel Mbangue had two free throws to give R-MC its first lead and his layup tied the game at 7-7 with 17:30 left in the first half. H-SC put up the next five points before consecutive treys by Morris gave R-MC a 13-12 edge with just under 13 minutes left. The Tigers would use a 14-4 run to take their largest lead at 26-17 with 7:10 left. A jumper in the paint by Josh Talbert and a pair of free throws by Buzz Anthony made up a 4-1 spurt as the visitors cut the deficit to six at 27-21 with 5:30 remaining. H-SC pushed the lead back to nine at 32-23 before a layup by Miles Mallory and two more treys by Morris made it a one-point game at 32-31 with 1:10 left. The Tigers would tally the final two buckets of the half and take a 36-31 lead at the break. Morris led all scorers with 12 points. H-SC scored four of the first six points in the second half before a pair of triples by Anthony pulled R-MC within one at 40-39 with 17:20 remaining. R-MC trailed 44-43 before the Tigers banked in a trey and hit a second three-pointer to push the lead back to seven at 50-43. Morris, Will Coble and Lance Johnson each had two treys in a 22-6 run as R-MC took a 65-56 lead with 6:50 left. H-SC closed within six at 67-61 before Anthony scored seven and Mallory added six as R-MC scored 16 straight points to go ahead 83-61 before posting the 83-63 win. R-MC outscored H-SC 40-13 over the final 15 minutes.

Buzz Anthony was USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He had a career-high 32 points in 88-74 win over #13 Emory. He had his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

ODAC Player of the Week

Buzz Anthony was named ODAC Player of the Week on Feb. 14 for the third time this season. Anthony averaged 28.5 points and 7.0 assists in two victories, shooting 69% from the floor and 68.4% on treys. He had 25 points and eight assists in an 81-50 win at Bridgewater, including 20 points in the second half. Anthony matched his career high with 32 points in a 102-60 Senior Day win over Shenandoah at Crenshaw Gym.

 

Career Steals & Assists

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 225 career steals. He has 712 career assists, surpassing the ODAC record of 680 held by Tim Crawford of EMU (1977-81).

 

Daunting Defense

R-MC is first in the ODAC and third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 59.0 points per game. Over the past five contests, opponents have scored an average of 55.2 points per game. R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest. R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game.

Buzz Anthony and Miles Mallory are both on the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List. The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA, NCCAA).

R-MC is first in the ODAC in total blocks with 92. Miles Mallory is first in the conference and ninth in the country with 56 total blocked shots and 13th with 2.43 blocks per game. Mallory had a season-high seven blocks in the win over Lynchburg, matching his career best.
