Series: R-MC leads 21-2 since 1956

The Yellow Jackets have won nine straight and 22 of the past 24 games with the Hornets. R-MC won 92-54 earlier this season on Jan. 19 in Winchester.   R-MC captured the lone meeting a season ago, 102-51 in Winchester on Feb. 2, 2021. The Yellow Jackets won the only encounter two seasons ago, 85-59 on Jan. 29, 2020, in Ashland. R-MC won 90-56 on Jan. 31, 2018, in Winchester in the grand opening of the James R. Home Cookin'

With the victory over Roanoke, R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 42. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

 

Four Strong Years

Over the past four seasons, the Yellow Jackets are 88-7 overall (.926) and 47-2 in ODAC contests (.959).

 

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony scored 25 points, including 20 in the second half, and Miles Mallory recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds as R-MC closed the game on a 29-6 run in winning 81-50 at Bridgewater.

How it Happened:

•   Anthony hit a jumper 20 seconds into the contest to start the scoring. The Eagles put up the next eight points before Will Coble buried a pair of three-pointers to knot the score at 8-8 with 15:45 left in the first half. BC had the next four points before two free throws by Josh Talbert stopped the short run. The Eagles pushed their lead to 18-12 before six straight points by Talbert tied it at 18-18 with 7:45 remaining. The score was level at 26-26 before Anthony hit a trey to spark an 8-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets would lead 34-28 at the half. Talbert led R-MC with 10 points, while Coble added nine.

•   BC had a 5-3 start to the second half to pull within four at 37-33 before Anthony hit three triples to spark a 13-4 run that was capped by an Anthony layup as R-MC went up 50-37 with 13:45 left. The Eagles closed to within eight at 52-44 before three layups Mallory and five points by Anthony made up an 11-0 spurt as the visitors took a 63-44 advantage with 7:35 remaining. That started a 29-6 run for the Yellow Jackets as the posted the 81-50 victory. The R-MC defense held BC to one field goal in the final 12:45.

By The Numbers:

•   The Yellow Jackets had four score in double figures. Along with 25 by Anthony and 16 by Mallory, Coble finished with 15 to match his career high and Talbert scored 14.

 

Last Meeting

Buzz Anthony had 17 points and 10 rebounds as R-MC posted a 92-54 ODAC win at Shenandoah.

How it Happened:

  • The Hornets built an 8-4 lead three minutes into the contest before a three-pointer by Ian Robertson and a layup by Josh Talbert gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 9-8. R-MC led 13-12 before Will Coble nailed a trey and Anthony sank two triples to spark a 15-1 run as the visitors went up 28-13 with 7:30 left in the first half. A layup by Talbert gave R-MC a 36-20 advantage with 3:30 remaining. Another three-pointer by Robertson made it a 17-point lead at 39-22 with two minutes left. SU finished the scoring in the first half with a pair of free throws as R-MC took a 39-24 edge at intermission. Robertson hit four treys for 12 points, while Talbert added eight points with five assists.
  • SU hit a triple to start the second half before a three-pointer by Anthony and a three-point play by David Funderburg made it 45-27. After a bucket by the Hornets, Funderburg had a layup and Miles Mallory added a free throw as the lead grew to 19 at 48-29 with 16:45 left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets led 52-36 before a three-pointer by Coble and a layup by Talbert made it 57-36 with 13:30 remaining. A hook shot by Funderburg gave R-MC a 25-point cushion at 68-43 midway through the second period. Funderburg made a free throw to push the lead to 30 at 77-47 with 5:45 left. A follow by Noah Lindsay gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 92-53 before a free throw by SU made the final score 92-54.

Buzz Anthony was USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He had a career-high 32 points in 88-74 win over #13 Emory. He had his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

Fifth-year seniors Buzz Anthony and David Funderburg reached the 100-win plateau for their careers against BC. They now stand at 106 victories.

 

ODAC Player of the Week

Miles Mallory was named ODAC Player of the Week on Feb. 7 for the third time this season. Mallory averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in three ODAC wins. He had 14 points and five boards in 24 minutes in a road win at Randolph. Mallory had his eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 boards in a home win over second-place Guilford. He had 19 points and five caroms in a home win over Roanoke.

 

Career Steals & Assists

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 225 career steals. He has 706 career assists, surpassing the ODAC record of 680 held by Tim Crawford of EMU (1977-81).

 

Daunting Defense

R-MC is first in the ODAC and second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 59.0 points per game. Over the past four contests, opponents have scored an average of 54.0 points per game. R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest. R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game.

Buzz Anthony and Miles Mallory are both on the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List. The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA, NCCAA).

Miles Mallory is first in the conference and eighth in the country with 55 total blocked shots and 14th with 2.50 blocks per game.
