Women's Soccer

Women's Soccer Falls Victim to Strong VWU Second Half

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph Macon Women's Soccer took an early lead after Abbey Muir (Moseley, Va./Cosby) found the back of the net for the first time this season, but it was Virginia Wesleyan that answered the call with four second-half goals, including a Shyenne Diaz hat trick, to lay claim to the match. Both sides found themselves at the top of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference table at the start of the tilt.

The Basics:

Score: Virginia Wesleyan 4, Randolph-Macon 1

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 11-4-2 (6-2-1 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan 12-2-2 (7-1-1 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • Randolph-Macon took the early lead in the 29th minute as Muir made the most of a rebound from an Olivia Owens (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) shot. Muir's finish marks the first time she has found the back of the net in her sophomore campaign, matching the goal that came last year.
  • Virginia Wesleyan had to wait until the second stanza to find an equalizer as Julia Marrone brought the Marlins level with a strike from straight away.
  • The Marlins then found their first lead of the affair just four minutes later, as Diaz scored the first of three goals on the evening for VWU.
  • Diaz's final two scores came just two minutes apart as she found the back of the net in the 79th and 80th minutes to push things out of reach.

By The Numbers:

  • Abby Cook (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) finished the contest with three saves for Randolph-Macon as she played all 90 minutes as the Yellow Jacket netminder .
  • Wednesday's loss comes as the first time this season that the Yellow Jackets fell in a contest in which they scored a goal, previously going 11-0-1 in like matches.

Up Next:

  • Randolph-Macon will see one final ODAC conference match in the regular season before postseason play approaches as they travel to Lynchburg, Saturday, October 29, to take on the Hornets. The match is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Shellenberger Field.
