Russ, Owens Score Early in Fast-Paced Win Over Roanoke

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Riley Russ (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and Olivia Owens (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) both find the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes to lead Randolph Macon Women's Soccer past Roanoke. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference win comes as the Yellow Jackets' sixth conference win in just eight tries.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 2, Roanoke 1

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 11-3-2 (6-1-1 ODAC), Roanoke 7-8-0 (4-5-0 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • Russ found the first goal in early action for Randolph-Macon in just the 8th minute, calling her own number on the unassisted chip with the keeper off her line to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0.
  • Owens was quick to answer the call for R-MC as well, as a ball fell to her feet in the box and the forward finished it to double the home side's advantage at 2-0 in just the 13th minute
  • Roanoke got one back in the 18th minute as Morgan O'Neill used a cross from Eliza Ryan to pull within one for the Maroons, but neither side was able to break through the rest of the way.
  • Randolph-Macon and Roanoke both used strong performances from their defensive units to see the final 70 minutes be played scoreless.

By The Numbers:

  • Russ and Owens both continue to match each other as their goals tonight give them six apiece on the year, making up 12 of the 28 total goals scored by the Yellow Jackets this season.
  • Keeper Abby Cook (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) allowed just one goal on the night as she finished with one save after seeing just two shots on frame. The win in the net is the seventh on the year for the junior.
  • The win marks just the second time that Randolph-Macon has earned three points in a match in which they concede, as the Yellow Jackets have recorded 10 clean sheets in 16 matches.

Up Next:

  • Randolph-Macon will be back in front of the home fans for the final time in the regular season as they play hosts to Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday, October 26. The affair is set for a 4:00 p.m start at Nunnally Field.
