Parker Rewrites Record Books in Five Set Thriller at Washington and Lee

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Randolph-Macon women's volleyball found themselves down two sets early but battled back to force a deciding fifth set before eventually falling on the road at Washington and Lee. Grace Parker (Andover, N.J./Pope John XXIII) continues her tear in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, recording 36 kills to set the school record for kills in a single match. The 36 finishers also stands as the third most ever in an ODAC match, matching Briana Beckham's output back in 2002.

The Basics:

Scores: Washington and Lee 3, Randolph-Macon 2 (25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 17-25, 15-12)

Location/Venue: Lexington, Va./Duchossois Athletic & Recreation Center

Records: Randolph-Macon (14-3, 7-2 ODAC), Washington and Lee (12-8, 9-1 ODAC)

How It Happened:

  • The opening set saw Washington and Lee take control down the stretch as the Generals were swinging with much success, finishing the stanza with a .314 hitting percentage while holding the Yellow Jackets to a .250 percentage.
  • The second stanza saw both sides show some defense, as each side slowed the opposite's offense. The stanza was tied at 10 all, but Washington and Lee used a handful of kills from Riley Debiec to close out the set and take a 2-0 advantage.
  • Randolph-Macon found success throughout the third set in an effort to get back into the match, as the Yellow Jackets got high offensive output from their swingers while also flashing some net play, holdong the Generals to a .079 hitting percentage..
  • Randolph-Macon would be called on to make plays down the stretch of the fourth set to keep the match alive, and they did just that. Parker closed the set out with her 11th kill of the stanza to keep the Yellow Jackets in it.
  • The fifth set was a thriller with both teams matching the other as neither team was able to build a lead of more than two until the final few points. Things were knotted up at nine apiece before Washington and Lee went on a 6-3 run to close the set and clinch the match.

Inside The Numbers:

  • Parker led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 36 kills, setting a school record, while Maddie DeCandido (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) tallied 20 digs to lead the way on the defensive side.
  • Leslie Currie (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) and Parker also shined on the defensive side of the net, as currie recorded 19 digs and Parker found 16 of her own to give her a double-double.
