R-MC leads 95-54 since 1956

The Yellow Jackets have won eight in a row, 12 of the past 14 and 15 of the past 18 encounters with the Tigers. R-MC won the lone meeting a season ago, posting a 79-65 victory in Ashland on Jan. 20, 2021. R-MC swept three games two seasons ago, winning at H-SC 82-64 on Nov. 23, winning 84-58 in Ashland on Feb. 19, and posting an 80-61 victory on Feb. 28 in the quarterfinals of the 2020 ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va. Josh Merkel is 10-2 against Hampden-Sydney.

Home Cookin'

With the victory over Bridgewater,      R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 40. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 212 career steals.

 

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony had 20 points and nine assists as R-MC shot 78% in the first half in defeating Bridgewater 80-51.

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets exploded to an 18-0 lead in the first seven minutes. R-MC had six different players score, with five by DaQuan Morris and four free throws by Anthony. The Eagles sank two free throws with 12:53 left in the first half and made their first field goal with 12:12 remaining. The Yellow Jackets made 11 of their first 12 field goal attempts in building a 29-8 lead with eight minutes left. A jumper by Anthony pushed the advantage to 25 at 37-12 with 4:45 left. Josh Talbert had two of the final three buckets in the half for R-MC as the home team led 48-19 at the break. The Yellow Jackets went 20 of 26 from the floor for 77% and 16-20 (80%) inside the arc. Anthony had 17 points and 6 assists.
  • David Funderburg had a layup to cap an 8-4 start to the second half as     R-MC took its largest lead at 56-23 with 17:15 remaining. BC scored nine straight to cut the deficit to 24 before a triple by Anthony made it 59-32 with 13:13 left. Talbert hit a free throw and a layup to extend the lead back to 29 at 66-37 with 8:15 remaining. Loginn Norton hit a jumper to push the lead back to 30 at 76-46 with three minutes left. Norton went 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the final two minutes as R-MC recorded the 80-51 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Anthony had 20, Talbert added 15 and Daniel Mbangue tallied 10, one away from his career high.

Last Meeting

Ian Robertson sank eight three-pointers as part of his career-high 30 points, and Miles Mallory had a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards, as R-MC beat Hampden-Sydney 79-65 in a non-conference contest in Ashland. The teams stayed within two points of each other during the first eight minutes of the game. The Tigers led 14-13 before a triple by Robertson and a jumper by Mallory gave the Yellow Jackets an 18-14 lead with 11:55 left in the first period. H-SC pulled within one before Daquan Morris had a layup and a trey as R-MC went up 25-21 with 7:50 remaining. The Tigers had eight of the next 10 points to claim a 29-27 edge with six minutes left. Robertson scored the next 14 points for the Yellow Jackets, with four triples and a pair of free throws, as R-MC took a 41-33 lead with 1:45 left. H-SC had four of the final six points of the period as the Yellow Jackets took a 43-37 lead at the break. Robertson had 17 first-half points, while Mallory added 10. The Tigers cut the deficit to three at 47-44 before a pair of treys by Morris started a 12-5 spurt, capped by a triple and a free throw by Will Paige as R-MC took its first double-digit lead at 59-49 with 12:20 remaining. The Yellow Jackets led by seven before a 10-3 run was made up by two free throws and a follow by Mallory followed by a pair of three-pointers by Robertson, as R-MC took its largest lead at 72-58 with 4:40 left. The Yellow Jackets had their final five points from the free throw line in posting the 79-65 victory. Morris tallied a career-best 11 points. Robertson went 9 for 14 from the floor, 8 for 13 on treys and 4 for 4 from the free throw line.

Anthony: National Player of the Week

Buzz Anthony was USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He had a career-high 32 points in 88-74 win over #13 Emory. He had his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

Fifth-year seniors Buzz Anthony and David Funderburg reached the 100-win plateau for their careers with the victory over Bridgewater.

 

Taking Care of the Ball

R-MC is averaging 11.4 turnovers per game, second in the ODAC and 31st in the country. The Yellow Jackets have averaged just 9.8 turnovers in the past five games. A season ago, R-MC led the ODAC and was seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. R-MC is tops in the conference and seventh in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.54. The Yellow Jackets have had 103 assists and 49 turnovers in the past five games for an assist/turnover ratio of 2.10.       R-MC was first in the league and seventh in the country a season ago in assist/turnover ratio at 1.64. Last season, R-MC was tops in the league and 15th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.3.

 

Daunting Defense

The Yellow Jackets are first in the ODAC and fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 59.2 points per game. Over the past nine contests, opponents have scored an average of 54.1 points per game. Over the past two games, the R-MC defense has allowed 49.5 points per contest.  R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest.   R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game.

Buzz Anthony and Miles Mallory are both on the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List. The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA, NCCAA).

R-MC is first in the ODAC and 24th in the nation in total blocks with 72. Miles Mallory is first in the conference and 11th in the country with 43 total blocked shots and 12th with 2.69 blocks per game. Mallory had a season-high seven blocks in the win over Lynchburg, matching his career best.
