The Yellow Jackets have won eight straight and 21 of the past 23 games with the Hornets. R-MC captured the lone meeting a season ago, 102-51 in Winchester on Feb. 2, 2021. The Yellow Jackets won the only encounter two seasons ago, 85-59 on Jan. 29, 2020, in Ashland. R-MC won 90-56 on Jan. 31, 2018, in Winchester in the grand opening of the James R. With the victory over Lynchburg, R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 39. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony led all scorers with 26 points and Miles Mallory had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, as R-MC outscored Lynchburg 45-25 in the second half in an 84-65 victory.

How it Happened:

  • Anthony nailed a pair of three-pointers as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-0 lead three minutes into the contest. The Hornets used a 22-4 spurt to go up 22-14 with 11:45 left in the first half. Will Coble and Josh Talbert hit consecutive treys to pull R-MC within two at 22-20 midway through the period. Lynchburg built the lead back to eight at 37-29 with 4:30 remaining. The Yellow Jackets trailed 40-34 before a jumper by Lance Johnson with two minutes left and a triple by Anthony with three seconds remaining made it a one-point game at intermission. Anthony had 15 points in the first half.
  • Anthony hit a jumper, Talbert made a layup and David Funderburg sank a free throw to give the home team a 44-40 advantage one minute into the second stanza. Mallory had a jumper, a three-point play and a free throw to push the lead back to 10 at 54-44 with 14:40 left in the contest. The Hornets cut it to six before Johnson and DaQuan Morris sandwiched three-pointers around five points by Anthony in an 11-4 run as R-MC went up 65-52 with 8:30 remaining. Lynchburg scored four straight before a layup by Mallory, treys by Morris and Johnson, and a layup by Anthony gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 77-58 with 3:30 left. A final three-pointer by Mallory with 30 seconds left gave R-MC the 84-65 victory.

Last Meeting

Josh Talbert had his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and a career-best 14 rebounds as Randolph-Macon won 102-51 at Shenandoah.

How it Happened:

  • David Funderburg had a pair of layups to start the scoring for the Yellow Jackets, the second giving  R-MC the lead for good. Talbert had a three-pointer and a layup, and a triple by Ian Robertson gave R-MC a 12-3 lead four minutes into the contest. The Hornets pulled within four before a jumper by Buzz Anthony ended the run, giving the Yellow Jackets a 14-8 lead with 13:10 remaining. The visitors had a seven-point lead midway through the half at 19-12 before closing on a 37-8 run to lead 56-20 at the break. Lance Johnson hit a triple at the buzzer to cap the spree. Anthony had 14 first-half points, going 5 for 9 from the floor and 4 for 6 on treys.
  • A jumper by Anthony extended the lead to 40 at 62-22 two minutes into the second half. A triple by Daquan Morris with 12:45 remaining gave the Yellow Jackets a 50-point advantage at 78-28. A jumper by Noah Lindsay gave R-MC its largest lead of 53 at 99-46 with 1:40 left before claiming the 102-51 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had 13 different players score, including four in double figures. Anthony had 20 points, Talbert tallied 14, Robertson added 12 and Funderburg finished with 11.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 53% from the floor (40-76) and 44% on treys (14-32).
  • R-MC had a 54-31 advantage on the boards. Along with 14 by Talbert, Anthony had six and Robertson five.

Buzz Anthony was USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He had a career-high 32 points in 88-74 win over #13 Emory. He had his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

The Yellow Jackets are first in the ODAC and 11th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 61.1 points per game.
