The Series: R-MC leads 49-11

R-MC has won 16 of the past 20 meetings with EMU. The series dates back to 1990 and all encounters have been ODAC games. The Yellow Jackets are 25-1 at home, 19-9 in Harrisonburg and 5-1 in ODAC tourney games against EMU. The teams did not play a season ago. R-MC won the only meeting two seasons ago, 77-49 on Jan. 15, 2020 in Harrisonburg. The Royals won on their last trip to Ashland, 70-69 in overtime on Jan. 24, 2018.

Home Cookin'

With the victory over Averett, R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 37. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

Last Time Out

Miles Mallory had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead R-MC to a 68-54 win over Averett.

How it Happened:

  • Layups by Daniel Mbangue and David Funderburg preceded a triple by Will Coble as R-MC took a 7-2 lead four minutes in. The Cougars scored five straight to tie the contest before a layup by Lance Johnson stopped the streak and gave R-MC a 9-7 edge with 12:45 left. AU trailed 11-10 before a layup by Noah Lindsey and two layups by Mallory gave R-MC a 17-10 advantage with nine minutes remaining. The Cougars hit a pair of treys to pull within one before two free throws by Mallory and a bucket by Mbangue put R-MC up 21-16 with 5:45 left. AU scored eight straight points to go up three before triples by Can Dalli, Mallory and Coble gave the Yellow Jackets a 30-24 advantage with 1:20 left. The Cougars got the next three points before another trey by Dalli gave R-MC a 33-27 halftime lead.
  • A jumper by Mallory gave R-MC a 37-30 edge two minutes into the second half. A bucket by Mallory and a follow by Lindsey gave R-MC its first double-digit lead at 45-35 with 13:10 left. AU cut the deficit to five at 45-40 with just under 12 minutes left before the R-MC defense held the Cougars scoreless over the next seven minutes. Josh Talbert had two layups in an 8-0 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 53-40. After four points by AU, Mallory had two buckets and two free throws to go along with a Talbert dunk in making up another 8-0 spurt as R-MC took a 61-44 lead with 2:39 left on its way to a 68-54 win.

Last Meeting

Buzz Anthony led all scorers with 20 points as R-MC posted a 77-49 ODAC victory at Eastern Mennonite. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Royals without a field goal over the first seven minutes as R-MC started on an 18-2 run. Anthony hit his first four shots during the spurt, two jumpers and a pair of three-pointers for 10 points. A layup by David Funderburg gave R-MC a 20-4 advantage before EMU used a 12-2 run to pull within six at 22-16 with 6:30 left in the first half. The visitors had a 24-18 edge before Josh Talbert had seven points in a 9-0 spurt as R-MC went up 33-18 with 1:30 left. After a layup by EMU, Anthony drew a double team inside and passed out to Ian Robertson, who nailed a three-pointer just before the buzzer as R-MC took a lead of 36-20 at the break. Anthony led R-MC with 10 points, while Talbert added seven and Funderburg tallied six. Funderburg led the Yellow Jackets on the boards with four caroms. R-MC held the Royals to 33% shooting from the floor (8-24) and 17% from beyond the arc (1-6). Miles Mallory and Corey Bays had layups to start the second half as the lead grew to 20 at 40-20. Consecutive three-point plays by Funderburg and Anthony pushed the advantage to 28 at 51-23 with 15:30 left in the second stanza. A three-pointer by Anthony gave R-MC a 31-point lead at 59-28 with 11:15 remaining. The Royals cut the deficit to 20 at 64-44 with 5:30 remaining before a three-pointer and a three-point play by Talbert capped a 13-0 run as R-MC went up 77-44 with one minute left. EMU had the final five points as it finished 77-49. R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with the 20 by Anthony, Talbert tallied 17 and Mallory added 10. Funderburg finished with nine.

Anthony: National Player of the Week

Buzz Anthony was USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He had a career-high 32 points in 88-74 win over #13 Emory. He had his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

Taking Care of the Ball

R-MC is averaging 12.1 turnovers per game. A season ago, the Yellow Jackets led the ODAC and were seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7.     R-MC is tops in the conference and 26th in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.33. The Yellow Jackets were first in the conference and seventh in the country a season ago in assist/turnover ratio at 1.64. Last season, R-MC was tops in the league and 15th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.3.

 

Daunting Defense

R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation in scoring defense a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest.   R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game. This year, the Yellow Jackets are second in the ODAC and 13th in the country, allowing 61.3 points per outing.
