Field Hockey Drops To Mary Washington

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – In a battle of teams with identical records, Randolph-Macon fell to visiting Mary Washington to close out the first month and non-conference competition on Wednesday evening.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 0, Mary Washington 3

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 4-4, Mary Washington 5-3

How It Happened

  • Mary Washington controlled the pace of play early and outshot the Yellow Jackets 7-1 in the opening frame. Despite that, Gatlin Snyder (Sr., Sr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) kept the Eagles scoreless for most of the frame with five saves.
  • The visitors eventually broke through on a penalty corner as Maggie Ellis scored on a Jessica Wood helper with 65 seconds remaining in the first. Roles appeared reversed in the second quarter with the Jackets holding a 6-2 advantage on shots and the edge on penalty corners as well, but both teams were held scoreless.
  • The Eagles added a second goal in the third after another penalty corner when Riley Tengwall deflected in a Sydney Keating attempt in the 38th minute.
  • The Yellow Jackets appeared to cut the deficit back down to one as Maria-Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Trinity) put a shot above the keeper's head and into the goal, but the attempt was ruled dangerous and a foul which resulted in a change of possession.
  • The Eagles' Lauren Boucher added the final goal when her shot attempt went in after it deflected in off of one the Yellow Jackets' sticks with five minutes remaining.

Inside The Numbers

  • The Jackets were outshot 16-7 overall in the game.
  • Mary Wash also controlled the penalty corners by a 13-3 mark.
  • Snyder finished with nine saves on the night. Annika Egerland (Jr., Forest Hill, Md. / Bel Air) provided a defensive save to give the Lemon and Black 10 on the evening.

Up Next

October awaits the Jackets with a slate of nine ODAC games. First up is a trip to Shenandoah to take on the Hornets on Saturday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
