Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – It was business as usual for the Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team as they defeated Shenandoah in its ODAC opener on Wednesday evening. The Yellow Jackets remained unbeaten against the Hornets with a sweep for their 22nd consecutive win in league openers.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Shenandoah 0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-23)
Venue: Crenshaw Gym
Records: Randolph-Macon 5-4, Shenandoah 3-7
How It Happened
- Randolph-Macon never trailed and jumped out in front of Shenandoah 9-3 at the start to force the Hornets to call their first timeout. The visitors were able to cut the deficit to four at 11-7 before an 8-3 rally capped by a Megan Bost (So., Angier, N.C. / West Johnston) kill gave RMC its largest lead of the night at 19-9. The Jackets equaled that advantage a little later after three-straight kills made the score 23-13.
- The second set was close at the start with four lead changes taking place between the teams by the time the score was 7-6 in favor of RMC. The latter occurred in the middle of a 5-0 run by the Lemon and Black as a pair of aces by Leslie Currie (So., Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) sparked the charge to make the score 10-6.
- Shenandoah remained in the set and eventually got back within two at 22-20, but the Jackets closed out the game with the final three points thanks to Hornet errors.
- Another fast RMC start saw the hosts go up 5-0 only to see Shenandoah answer with five consecutive points of their own. The game was tied as late as 22-all before Shenandoah took its last lead with the next point. The Yellow Jackets were able to bounce back, however, and scored the next three on a kill and an ace by Grace Parker (Jr., Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) followed by a kill by Sydney Koch (Sr., Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) to seal the match.
Inside The Numbers
- Parker had an incredible outing and finished the night with match-best 17 kills. The number matches her previous career best set two years ago and is a new career best in a three-set match.
- Parker did so on 33 attempts with just four errors for a hitting percentage of .394. She added five digs defensively.
- Also strong on the attach was Koch who hit .400 with nine kills on the evening.
- Defensively Danielle LaRosa (Sr., Charlottesville, Va. / Albermarle) added to her block totals with one solo and two assists. Koch also added one of each variety.
- Currie and Madison Warlick (Sr., Charlottesville, Va. / Albermarle) led in the reception area with 10 digs each.
- Macguire Gubba (Sr., Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) set up the attack with 37 assists, a new season-best in three set matches.
